The Republican party is the oldest political party in our nation’s history, second only to the Democrats. The party was formed in a reaction to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, a law allowing states to dictate their stance on slavery via popular sovereignty. As such, Republicans built their initial campaigns on abolitionist ideals and promoting the inalienable rights of life, liberty and happiness to all Americans. The group was practically nonexistent in the slaveholding south and predominantly rallied its support from the Union.
