Since as far back as I can recall, I have carried a deep desire to help those in need. Like most children, I would plead with my mom for some money anytime we passed a homeless person on the street . But I can distinctly remember the overwhelming feeling of sadness I would get in the pit of my stomach when I saw someone else in need. I couldn 't understand why some people in the world just seemed to have been forgotten about. Although I was young, and could not fathom the complexities of poverty, I did understand how uncomfortable it made me feel. This feeling I experienced as a child is the same one I experience to this day, only now I can see it for what it really is. As I continued my education I became increasingly aware of societal issues-- …show more content…
I have seen people experience trauma, and I have experienced it myself. Most importantly, I have discovered that the old woman begging for money on the side of the road is just one small piece of the puzzle. This was just one of many disparities people were faced with. I have accepted and come to terms with the fact that our world and society are simply not designed for everyone. A great deal of our population has been left on the fringes, lacking the tools to access what they truly need. These realizations are what have motivated me to pursue a career in Social Work. Having to financially support myself during my undergraduate studies, I found it difficult to find time to both volunteer and complete my school work. However, I was elated to learn that the school I was attending offered an amazing opportunity for students to volunteer during their spring break. I immediately took advantage of this opportunity since my schedule would finally allow for me to do some service work. I chose to work with Habitat for Humanity for the week. As a team, we spent our days assistng the builders with some moderate tasks reconstructing a home. Although to some, our efforts to fix this one small home in one small …show more content…
Having to work full time, my schedule is going to be very tight. However, I am certain that continuing my career with RUPCO, forming connections, and providing case management will complement my education and learning experience. I will be honest in stating that I am not entirely sure which specific line of social work I would like to be involved in once I graduate, since there is so much I am passionate about. I am sure that in time I will develop a more specific interest in a certain area, but all of our societal issues go hand in hand, so I would be honored to work amongst many types of
The basis of this assignment was to create a further and more in depth understanding of my chosen field, social work. Social workers aid and support individuals, groups, and communities through difficult times and ensure that vulnerable people are safeguarded from harm. Without them our nation would not have the proper support to establish order and relations in society. I explored the numerous types of social working jobs, ranging from Child, Family, and School social workers, Mental Health and Substance Abuse social workers, to social workers in Administration, Policy, and Research. I provided all of the educational requirements necessary to become a social worker, along with the benefits of acquiring a higher degree. In addition, I included the average salary of an entry level social worker and the average salary for a social worker with a Master’s degree or other professional licensure. I provided all essential information one would need to know before entering the field of social work. For example, what the job requires beyond what you can learn in a classroom. Patience, understanding and empathy are a few of the many imperative personality traits a social work must possess. Along with the facts and statistics I incorporated into my paper, I also included a personal section explaining why I chose to enter this field.
As a child growing up in an impoverished neighborhood and in a low income family; I always had dreams and goals of helping other families that endured the same struggles I encountered as a child. My desire grew stronger as I watched my grandmother effortlessly helping the lives of battered women and children. She was very passionate about everything she did to help someone even if she had to use her last dime. Her devotion and aspiration to help people in need is why I chose to pursue a career in social work. She was my role model and a perfect example of someone I would love to be like. Choosing a career in social work comes with ample of field opportunities which are one of the reasons why I am interested in
Choosing a career is a very important aspect to people’s lives. One goes to college, usually around the age of eighteen, and by the time they leave they are expected to have decided on the career that they will have for the rest of their lives. Being a psychology and interpersonal communication major, I have always had an interest on relationships between individuals given certain stimuli presented to them. I want to have the ability to touch people’s lives by helping them understand themselves and why they behave the way in which they behave. Relationships are such an important aspect to the process of human growth, and they impact each and every one of us. Due to this assessment of myself, I have decided to go to college to pursue my goals of being a clinical social worker.
Living under government oppression since I was a child, the seed of advocating for the vulnerable and those who have been unfairly treated has been deeply planted in my heart. My education and work experiences have further strengthened my faith that pursuing Ph.D. degree in Social Work is the most effective way to achieve my career goals. My life story and education and work histories outlined below will provide evidence of my qualifications and strong motivation.
First of all I would like to say that a career in the field of social work would be an amazing opportunity. There are so many fields and avenues you can explore with this type of degree. If I was to be expected into the University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Social Work it would be a blessing in so many ways to me as well as my two children. According to the National Association of Social Work (NASW), Social work is defined as, “The professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to this goal.” As such to pursue a career as a Social worker one must contain some key values. I interned as a court advocate and attended court hearings while also working one on one with the client. I felt that this was the real test to see if the passion I’ve always had for helping others could now be applied in the social work profession. After the first month at Haven I was excited because I had finally found a job that I could actually see myself pursuing as a career. Not only has Haven taught me how to implement social policies and work with a variety of clients, but it also has changed me as a person. One of the things I was greatly affected by was trauma stewardship. I would find myself worrying constantly if I did everything correctly, but also replaying the cases in my head. I never really thought about self-care for myself while also helping others. This experience taught me that you have to be really self-aware of your feelings and take care of yourself. Attending weekly debriefing sessions at Haven has helped me greatly. My experience with Haven has also helped me with not only being a better professional but also has allowed me to be more aware of what I’m feeling; something I know that will be paramount when I enter the social work
It taught me to be resilient, driven, empathetic towards people facing any challenge, also made me a great listener and a creative problem solver. When I came to the United States, I encountered major cultural and language shock. I barely knew any English nevertheless with hard work and great determination; I was able to significantly improve my English within the first year. I refused to let language barrier come between my dreams, which was and still is becoming a social worker. I continue to set new goals for myself and work hard to achieve them. Growing up in the foster care system will also help me understand the youth and family I will be serving. I believe the crucial qualities I gained through my experience equip me for the social work
Hello class, I am Ashley Jimenez. This is my second year at Fayetteville State University, and my major is social work. After years of doing one or two classes here and there, and saying I was focusing on “general education,” I finally decided on a major in social work after a couple of personnel experiences. I am currently serving in active duty (Army) as a Staff Sergeant, and have been in the Army for nine years. Although the Army has an awesome MSW program partnered with FSU, I am not fully convinced that this is the route I’d like to go for my career in social work. My reason for being uncertain is because I would love to work with children and families once I am fully certified. Correct me if anyone has any information, but I believe that
Since I was young, I have had the desire to help others. Out of four children, I was born the youngest in my family, therefore I contribute my knowledge to my siblings. In addition, my mother was a great influence to me. In fact, she taught me the value of integrity, how to be a compassionate person, and understand the importance of helping others; and she is the biggest reason I felt this major would be the right fit for me.
My reasoning behind deciding to pursue a career in social work stems from my seemingly innate desire to see others succeed in fulfilling their potential. Although it feels somewhat of a cliché, my passion and desire for the field of social work originates from a genuine wish to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
Not many people can handle the stress of being a social worker, but in the end it is very rewarding. This job is not an everyday job for some people, it is a lot of hard work and it is helping people with situations that a person doesn’t see everyday. As a social worker it takes a lot to get through to people and for them to understand that what they are going through is not okay.

When I was younger poverty and homelessness seemed like such far out terms. I didn’t understand how someone didn’t live in a house with four walls and a roof over their head. When I thought about poverty, I always pictured third world countries most of the time. Especially due to the commercials of these places with the children crying, wearing scraps of cloth, and having to drink polluted water. In regard to homelessness, I had the views that usually appear in movies, disheveled people on the streets who have drug and alcohol problems. As I grew up I started to notice how each person has an important role in society, but I couldn’t see what their role could be. In school we didn’t really talk about these people either so I assumed they weren’t really apart of society. My parents combatted that with teaching us the ‘golden rule’ and treating others how you would want to be treated. There are some instances that they gave some money to these people. Since I had the views from what I saw on TV. I thought they would go spend it on drugs or alcohol. I remember asking my mom why give them money if they are going to spend it on those things. She said that that is not for me to worry about and that we do it
