The Official Attitudes of the Christian Church

The Anglican Church or the Church of England believes that life is

sacred but sometimes abortion is the best way out of a bad situation

such as endangering the life of the mother. They quote "The Church of

England's view on abortion is that the life of the foetus endangers

the life of the mother, action can be taken" in the Church of England

Report 1984.

The Roman Catholic Church has opposite views, they believe that life

begins at conception so abortion breaks one of the Ten Commandments -

do not kill. The Catholic Church totally disagrees with abortion and

they say, " We have been made like God. God plans the birth of all

babies and makes them with the parents. In every foetus God has made a

completely new human being. Human life is given by God. All people

must realise that. Only God can end life." Under no circumstance in

the Catholic Church must a woman have an abortion even if her life is

in danger if this child is to be born. They think that God means it to

happen in this way.

The Methodist Church are more precise than the Church of England, in

the situations that abortion are acceptable. These are "when the life

of the mother is in danger, when the baby will be born with a severe

handicap or when the children the mother is already bringing up might

suffer badly if a new baby arrives.

The Church of Scotland has similar beliefs to the Methodist Church.

The Church is against abortion on demand, which is when women want an

abortion for no particular reason other than for themselves. The

Church of Scotland believes that abortion is right, if there is a

threat to the mother's health, if there is proof that the mother was

raped, or if it is certain that the baby will be handicapped. Again

the Church of Scotland has more precise rules than the Church of

England.
