There are many organizations that support the nurse as a leader and continue to help grow that individual. To understand and choose the perfect organization that is right for the individual they must identify their philosophy of care. Philosophy of care is different for every individual, but yet plays a huge role. The author will be able to identify their outlook on their philosophy of care, elaborate on two nursing organizations, and how they support the authors philosophy of care.

The main focus on AANP political stance includes several values that provide a great framework. With both organizations they can help an individual to become a great leader and to be able to gain an abundance of knowledge. These organizations provide a great wealth of knowledge and job opportunities not just within the work force but great volunteer opportunities to go out into our community. Being able to be a part of an organization sets an individual apart and is able to learn more than just the normal. Nurses and physicians need to become partners in health care reform. We have a responsibility to provide competent care to our patients. National standards need to be put in place to decrease the inconsistencies in APN practice. Overwhelming data supports the APN over the physician in cost effectiveness, quality and access to care and many other aspects.
According to Chitty & Black (2014) the philosophy of nursing is defined as beliefs and values that are the bases for how we think and act in our nursing careers. Similar to a nursing philosophy, a personal philosophy includes a person’s specific beliefs and values. The purpose of this paper is to start evolving my own personal nursing philosophy that contains my own beliefs and values that I will take with me throughout my career as a registered nurse.
Provision 8 states, “The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the public in promoting community, national, and international efforts to meet health needs.” (Nursing World, 2001). Provision 8 taught me that ANA’s goals are not limited to the health and welfare of individuals, but their goals also encompass the welfare of the community through promotion of collaborative work of nurses with other health professionals and the members of the community.

The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. This not only displays concern for patients but also beneficence because they try to do good for the people, the association attempts to fight for patients’ rights and the guarantee of access to healthcare to everyone without discrimination. The greatest aspect about nursing is that it is never going to be just a job and is even more than a merely profession. Instead, it is a belief system or way of life and not a discipline that can simply be practiced then abandoned to the dictates of a time clock. To simply say that “I love people” or want to “help people get better” does not demonstrate the drive behind this feeling. Articulating my philosophy is not an easy task, to better explain my philosophy of nursing, I am going to use some values that I have learned. These tools truly explain how I feel and what has motivated me to pursue nursing as a career.
Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.
In conclusion, Jean Watson’s theory of caring, a middle-range theory, provides essential framework and guidelines in nursing shortage problem. I chose nursing as my profession because nursing is my ideal profession. In nursing, I can provide others with the care and the knowledge they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are many benefits to joining a professional organization and individuals become a member for a variety of reasons, but it is typically to advance or advocate for their career (Sullivan, 2001). Professional nursing organizations advocate for their members and nurses in general by providing a powerful influence and the support needed to meet changes in the world of healthcare (Matthews, 2012). According to Haley-Andrews, belonging to a professional nursing organization is important for nurses of all proficiencies. Membership can enhance the career of veteran nurses or play a critical part in creating a successful beginning for new graduate nurses (Haley-Andrews, 2001).
Nurses are uniquely qualified to fill a demand for change through leadership. Unlike business minded individuals whose primary outcome concern is monetary, a nurses’ primary concern is organic: a living, breathing, tangible being. In a leadership role, a nurse might consider an organization as if it were a grouping of patients, or perhaps an individual patient, each limb with its own characteristics and distinct concerns. They can effectively categorize and prioritize important personal and professional matters and are therefore ideally positioned to lead change efforts. Perhaps most importantly, effective nurse leaders can provide clarity to the common goal and empower others to see their self-interests served by a better common good (Yancer, 2012).
Philosophy is defined as the study of the principals underlying thought, conduct, and the nature of the universe (Chitty & Black, 2014). This being said, philosophies of professional nursing are personal statements, values, and beliefs that we use as a bases for thinking and acting (Chitty & Black, 2014). Nursing to me is an extremely rewarding profession, as a nurse I possess many values and hold myself to higher standards in order to provide the best possible care for my patients. Some examples of professional nursing values are supporting fellow nurses by teamwork, health promotion for patients, and most importantly being non-judgmental and caring.
