The nuclear arms race was the fight for nuclear dominance between the USA and USSR; the view that it massively increased US-Soviet tensions can be agreed with up until the point of 1962 at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, nevertheless the actual threat of nuclear war led to there being a decrease in tensions. Other factors led to increased tensions between 1949 and 1963 like the personalities of the leaders and their policies and the Cuban Missile Crisis itself. Therefore, at the time of the nuclear arms race and its events there were massively increased tensions, but other factors such as personalities and their policies, and Cuba were able to stabilise what happened through the events of the nuclear arms race.

Furthermore the USSR were made to feel more competent when, in 1961, Yuri Gagarin (Russian cosmonaut) became the first man in space opposed to the failings of the USA. The reason this increased tensions was due to the fact that Russia now felt they had the capabilities to beat the USA when it came to events of competition, so this spurred them on to put more into nuclear weapons which increased tensions massively. Nevertheless, the removal of Jupiter ballistic missiles from Turkey and Italy, as a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 agreements, represented how the leaders were able to barter and stop a nuclear war, therefore stating that the nuclear arms race ultimately increased tensions to the point that the leaders backed down. Although the Cuban Missile Crisis agreements looked like a massive failure for Khrushchev, he had loosened the pressure on a possible blitz attack from the USA.
