The third and the New City Hall of New York has been built in the Lower Manhattan between Broadway and Park Row and is surrounded by a beautiful park. It was constructed and designed from 1803 to 1812 and is highly praised for its extra ordinary architecture. It is one of the oldest city halls and is still used in order to assist a developing municipal government. It has the authority over the five boroughs of New York City, they are Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Brooklyn. When the time came to replace the old city hall which was situated at Wall and Nassau Streets in 1700, the government officials held a competition to determine who would design the new one. The winner of the competition was Joseph Francois Mangin, a French man and a New Yorker named John McComb who built the city hall under French Influences. It is renowned for its exterior structure, which is often called “soaring rotunda” and soon its design became the designated landmark of New York City.
A rehabilitation project was organized in 2010 in order to preserve the building by fixing its structural issues. Through the support of some private donors, energy efficient heating and cooling system, fire safety system and new electrical services were installed so that it matches the standard of today’s building. The portrait collection of City Hall is a fundamental and a historically important part of the building, which includes more than 100 paintings of the presidents of United States, New York City mayors, members of the military and naval and as well as some important political leaders. The most recent and the 109th mayor of the New York City is Bill de Blasio. He has devoted his life fighting to ensure that everybody gets a fair treatment in every neighborhood. During the Hurricane Sandy which occurred in October 2012 he took great measures in order to fix the city and its victims. He also promised to improve and repair the city’s recovery effort. He also assured that he would quickly start the process of installing a new recovery team for the Hurricane sandy. Already the government has started repairing the damaged houses and others will be eligible as well to receive the full amount value of their property. Mayor Bill also mentions that the city has spent very little amount of $648 billion in federal and it has kept for rebuilding houses.
After reading the case study Welcome to the new town manager, by Mary Jane Kuffner Hirt, I established three major problems the community of Opportunity needed to correct. These problems involved the water & sewer system, the balancing budget, & the pay-as-you-go method. The city manager, Jennifer Holbrook, must implement strategies that would correct these problems quickly.

On 7 June 1969, hundreds of Puerto Ricans gathered in Spanish Harlem, New York City to protest the arrest of Juan" Fi" Ortiz for a series of falsified crimes.[2] As a crowd gathered outside the People's Church in El Barrio, Felipe Luciano addressed those assembled asserting that, " We will not allow the brutalization of our community to go on without a response. For every Puerto Rican that is brutalized, there will be retaliation."[3]Luciano's statements were not ignored, and as the crowd filtered into the streets their shouts of Despierta, Boricua. Defiende lo tuyo filled the air.
When Hurricane Sandy hit shore in 2012 it left behind a path of debris and destruction that the coastal communities of New Jersey and New York were not adequately prepared for. Starting as a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean, Sandy made its way up the Atlantic coast before making a sharp turn for the densely populated northeast. Unlike other hurricanes in the region, Sandy maintained momentum as it moved north and met unusually warm waters that helped fuel the storm’s enormous power. It made landfall during a high tide that creating record storm surges, that resulted flooding and massive damage. On its journey, the the hurricane accumulated energy as it merged with a low-pressure system coming from the west. These conditions created the vicious weather system that dumped rain and snow across the region. The destruction costs were among the highest in history, and more than a year later, communities are still working to recover. To many, Sandy was a wake-up call, creating a new sense of urgency to make cities and neighborhoods resilient in the face of natural disasters. Storms are an inevitable part of living on the coast, but the need for long-term recovery and preparation for the future is growing due to the threat of climate change.
More than 1,400 people lost their lives. It became the global symbol of American dysfunction and government negligence. At every level and in every duty, from engineering to social policy to basic logistics, there was revelations of malfunction and failure before, during, and after Katrina. With 80 percent of the city underwater it has been a slow road to recovery. Out of the 140,000 applicants, only 22,000 families have received funds for renovating their homes and only expending 1.3 billion out of the total allocated. Many people are still displaced, many are still waiting for their homes to be rebuilt, neighborhoods are still in shambles, and business are still trying to rebuild but for some the situation still remains
Measuring 250 feet long by 84 feet wide by 88 feet tall, Great Hall unquestionably has the capacity to impress just about anyone making their way through its massing. On the East and West facing walls of the space, there sits substantial composite glass windows, allowing for ample natural lighting within the Hall. The coffered ceiling supported by immense columns and stone all combine to create this striking and grand space. Though the space may not be appreciated as much as it should be from the thousands of individuals passing through on their frantic rush to and from work, the space offers so much historically and architecturally to say the least. The ability the space has to serve its function of guiding individuals on their way through various corridors yet still being able to maintain its historical significance in modern society makes it that much more special. It was not until the capital building was burned in the war of 1812 that Charles Bulfinch replaced Benjamin Latrobe as the architect of the capital (Kirker, 328). Bulfinch original plans for the capital was in a Federalist-style (Zawadzki, 20, Nov.). The Federalist-style is significant to the American myth and memory making because the style originated in the United States (Zawadzki, 20, Nov.). This was not only due to the size and devastation of the storm, but an effort by the federal government to better themselves in responding to natural disasters. The lesson was learned when the federal government was slow to call for response during hurricane Katrina years earlier. In the days immediately following Sandy’s impact, rescue missions were in full swing, rescuing trapped families in the New York Metropolitan area and Staten Island, mostly by use of helicopter. With the Pantheon being built over 1700 years ago, it’s amazing that architects are still using features and techniques from this work of architecture in modern creations. The use of this type of classical architecture will continue to be used in works for public space due to its remarkable exterior appearance and it’s long lasting structural durability. When both Jesse hall and the Pantheon are compared it is possible to see their similarities from the types of domes that top each, their external facades, and their interior plan. While they share many similarities, the differences that Bell and Binder used in their creation make this work of architecture unique to many other public spaces.
In downtown Minneapolis, the Foshay Tower stands as an important part of Minnesotan history, as a building once distinct in its height. Located on Marquette Avenue, it was once considered the tallest building in Minneapolis, before being surpassed by skyscrapers that were constructed years later. The building was constructed largely by Wilbur Foshay, who made a name for himself first in buying water and electric utilities throughout the midwest, and later by being convicted of mail fraud. The building itself holds a unique history: one of criminal activity, inopportune timing, and of a building constructed to extreme heights.
Irving Washington was born in 1783 in New York into a large family where he was the youngest of eleven children. He started his career from a law office feeling that it was a job not to his heart content. Being light-hearted and sardonic in his nature he attempted to write for the journal of his brother Peter called “The Morning Chronicle”. Later Irving and Peter thought of creating a high-quality literary mockery.
The “superstar” museum gained this status by considering every important detail during its establishment and initial phases of conversion from royal palace to museum (Gombault, 2002). As the purpose of the building changed, each room addressed new functions with new requirements. Although the function of the Louvre is different from the building’s original intention, the building is still appears dignified and important enough to display priceless artifacts and painting (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998). This consideration was applied in designing the Met. The Met looked towards the South Kensington Museum (Victoria and Albert) and the “ideal role model” due to its extensive collections and international reputation (Heckscher, 1995). The Met found itself in a similar situation to the South Kensington, because it did not have a building or a collection to start with (Heckscher, 1995). When designing museums, architects strived to create monuments that “prepare and educate the mind of the visitor (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998).” Education is an essential function of a museum. Acquiring, preserving, and properly displaying materials, permits a museum to fulfill this duty (Steffensen-Bruce, 1998). For instance, lighting is a factor that affects the manner in which artwork is viewed and can be properly appreciated. When determining the proper lighting for the Louvre, Comte d’Angiviller, strongly believed that natural, overhead lighting was the most effective solution (McClellan, 1994, p. 72). The same determination impacted the decision to add skylights at the Met. During the initial phase, architects Vaux and Mould, added skylights to the upper floor, and windows to the lower floor that provided a natural light solution (Heckscher, 1995). Renaissance architecture can be classified by Classical Roman, or Greco Roman, elements and was followed by the Baroque architecture, and Gothic architectural styles. Examples of Classical Roman elements would be basilicas, columns, domes, as well as the accentuation placed of balance, proportion, and geometry. The Palazzo Farnese interior shows a significant amount of arches and Renaissance paintings on the inside. On the exterior of the Palazzo Farnese a large number of columns are visible, as well as the geometry of the windows located above the columns. Almost 9 years ago an enormous hurricane smacked New Orleans that cause the outbreak of a massive flood. New Orleans was considered one of the most vibrant and poorest cities in America. The city of New Orleans as a whole had a very poor infrastructure that led them to a very catastrophic ending. Many people died during the event because no one took seriously the simulations that took place years before the happening, which had an organized system in which everyone knew what they needed to do in case of an emergency. The US government took responsibility over the catastrophe very fast and started a campaign to create awareness and to raise funds because the estimated amount of money needed to overcome the emergency was calculated at 81 billion dollars. The majority of the population was evacuated because the drowning was taking over the whole city in a very drastic way because the main levees in charged of keeping the water out of the city were completely devastated. New Orleans was not the only city that was taken over by Katrina; other states such as Arkansas & Kentucky that were situated in the route in which the storm went through were also affected by this natural disaster. New York is not only a beautiful state, it is also historically significant to me. With the tragedies that have occurred in New York, there are two events that have a momentous impact on my life. The attacks on the World Trade Centers affected not only the world, but my family as well. I had relatives and friends working and visiting the beautiful city during both tragedies and it never occurred to me that such disaster can happen to one person or family. Due to the level of importance of these tragedies, New York found a way to shed light on the positives of the state,
