The New Style of Campaigning in Jakarta Gubernatorial Election 2012
In 2012, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) won Jakarta Gubernatorial Election. They won on both rounds defeating five other incumbents, Fauzi Bowo and Nachrowi Ramli, Hendardji Soepandji and Ahmad Riza Patria, Hidayat Nur Wahid and Didik Junaidi Rachbini, Faisal Batubara and Biem Triani Benjamin, and Alex Noerdin and Nono Sampono (Komisi Pemilihan Umum, 2012a). Quick count of first round showed a result of 42.6 per cent and the second showed 53.82 per cent (Komisi Pemilihan Umum, 2012a; Komisi Pemilihan Umum, 2012b). Their rival at the second round were Fauzi Wibowo (Foke), the previous governor of Jakarta and Nachrowi Ramli (Nara), the regional representative council of Democrat Party for DKI Jakarta.
Jakarta has 10.1 million eligible population, made up of different ethnicities and religions (Basuki, 2012). 35.5 per cent of this population are Javanese, followed by Betawi (native Jakartans) by 27.65 per cent (Basuki, 2012). Other major ethnic groups are Sundanese at 15.27 per cent, Chinese (5.53 per cent), Batak (3.61 per cent), and Minangkabau (3.18 per cent) (Basuki, 2012). Muslim is the majority religion in Jakarta with 85 per cent of the population, followed by Christians at 10.7 per cent, Buddhists (3.3 per cent), and Hindus (0.2%) (Basuki, 2012).

Jokowi and Ahok’s win came as a surprise for not only Jakartans but also Indonesians as the traditional notion states that top posts must be held by someone of the local ethnicity and of the major religion, in this case, a Muslim Betawi (Basuki, 2012). Jokowi was not a Betawi and Ahok was a Christian from Chinese ethnicity. The res...
