Unfortunately, Carr’s argument applies to my generation’s web natives because they are engrossed in the web for twenty-four hours and seven days a week which leads to a plethora of them being sidetracked while doing their activities, unable to focus and reflect on many ideas, and their way of thinking is being modified. To begin with, a plethora of the net generation cyberspace natives are easily distracted from their activities. Although the internet seems to be innocuous to us, it is mentally harming us. As the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” exclaims, “The result is to scatter our attention and diffuse our concentration,” regarding the aftermath of viewing a multitude of internet advertisements in a matter of seconds. This articles stresses that countless web users have a diminutive attention span which results in a countless number of people struggling to concentrate and quickly complete their work.
It makes a strong impact on our self- esteem and creates a negative perspective of ourselves. This causes us to feel less than others. We all feel that we need to be approved by others and we start to feel depressed for not being good enough for them. Consequently, there have been people who have committed suicide due to bullying on social media networks. This supports my opinion because unfortunately, our generation depends on technology too much.
Steven Pinker states that “search engines lower our intelligence, encouraging us to skim on the surface of knowledge …” (1). Many students are not reading their assigned books anymore. Sparknotes and other web sites such as Shmoop have provided students with resources which are not useful. Students’ skim through these sites to read books. Most of the websites gives students’ plot summaries which are from another person’s take on that book .This damages the student 's’ chances of actually reading and understanding a book and having their own opinion .The more we run to search engines for answers the less we shall learn .
The effect can been seen on the society as people now hide behind screens and tend to have limited face to face commutation. It’s also ironic that many relationships were built through online chatting and later were disappeared without people meeting one another in reality. Perhaps, one of the most downsides of Social media is the weakening of the bond between family members. In other words, the overuse of technology such as laptops and smartphones have negatively affected healthy relationships and led to isolation, depression and psychological conditions due to the lack of support between family members. Education wise, social media is believed to be one of the reasons behind the drop in educational level and standard among teenagers and children.
Many people do not realize they have Internet addiction and don’t realize that because they are so into the viral life they are loosing track of time, they have trouble completing tasks, and Isolation from important people such as family and friends. (“Internet & Computer Addiction” N.P.) Another sign that show you have Internet addiction is when a person feels guilty or defensive about Internet use. These people usually get mad when you ask them questions like “Why you are always using Facebook”, or “You’re always using your phone”. If they answer back with an attitude then it is most likely that they have Internet addiction.
Although social media is used to connect with people, it is easy for people to get caught up and become alone and isolated. Over-dependency on social networks and media negatively affect people by causing depression, lower grades, psychological disorders and physical health problems. Excessive use of social media has been linked with depression. Nearly 400 million people in the world have accounts on either Facebook or MySpace.Doctors say it is not healthy for a person to compare him/herself to other people continuously as this can lead to a negative self image.."They don't like me" and "I'm not good enough" are thoughts that run through some peoples minds; these thoughts and others like them lead to an unhealthy life and depression. Study author Professor Paul Kirschner said, "The problem is that most people have Facebook or other social networking sites, their emails and maybe instant messaging constantly running in the background while they are carrying out other tasks.
People today live such an unhealthy lifestyle due to technology.
