While many may often notice that stress affects many adults, many often fail to see the affects of stress on teens and young adults. Starting at the crack of dawn, five days a week, teens are forced to get their brain in check and ready for the day. Most high schools begin around 7:30 and most of the time don 't get out till around two or three in the afternoon. Not only is the school day long enough, most students are also involved in some sort of extracurricular activity like a sport or a club. Some students even take the risk of being in a school sport and a sport outside of school. Stress is mainly known as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension. Stress was created and developed into something that wasn 't supposed to be negative. Today though it has evolved into something much worse. Stress puts so much pressure on a person 's mental health that they almost can 't handle it. Some school districts have even taken drastic measures to fix this issue within their district. They have created a bell schedule that is beneficial for all. Instead of starting at 7:15, instead they start at 8:15 but get out a little later. This is beneficial for students and staff. One because, the problem of sleep deprivation caused by stress is greatly decreased because of that extra hour. Studies show that people 's brain does not start to be in gear until around 10. That means, even though that one hour time difference may not seem all that good, it greatly affects the way students perform during the school day. It is also show that students getting more sleep leads to overall higher performance and GPAs. In I believe here is a huge correlation between stress caused by sleep deprivation and teachers. Unless there 's a specific need to, many teachers often do not discuss amongst themselves what homework they plan on assigning each night. That tends to lead to students having tons of homework one night and none the next. Teen Stress Teen stress is a huge problem in our day and age. This is not an exaggeration. Although this may seem unreal, teens today deal with a lot more than you’d think. You may think they have it easy, everything is set up for them so they don’t have to go through the hardships of adulthood, but the truth is, things may have gotten easier, but at the same time, they have gotten harder.

Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Stress is nearly unavoidable; a few major causes of stress include work, money, and the economy. Producing changes in many body systems, stress, in small amounts, is healthy, but excessive stress, when left untreated, can lead to anxiety and illness like increased heart rate and blood pressure and even altered immune function.
Stress is the combination of psychological, physiological, and behavioral reactions that people have in response to events that threaten or challenge them. Stress can be good or bad. Sometimes, stress is helpful, providing people with the extra energy or alertness they need. Stress could give a runner the edge he or she needs to persevere in a marathon, for example. This good kind of stress is called eustress. Unfortunately, stress is often not helpful and can even be harmful when not managed effectively. Stress could make a salesperson buckle under the pressure while trying to make a sales pitch at an important business meeting, for example. Moreover, stress can increase the risk of developing health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and anxiety disorders. This bad kind of stress is called distress, the kind of stress that people usually are referring to when they use the word stress.

Stress comes in many shapes and forms, it comes with the job of being human. My sources of stress come from the major parts of my life; academic pressure, social settings, and time management. As a high school student, high school in general is very stressful, but not only am I high school student I am also a college student. Double the responsibility means double the stress.
