Sleep deprivation, and irregular sleep schedules are particularly common among college students. This is usually common when students decide to start study or do their homework the night before it is due. If losing sleep continues on over a long time it leaves many negative impacts on one’s brain, academic performance, and health. The result of sleep deprivation leaves many negative impacts on one’s brain, academic performance, and health. Studies have shown that the sleep loss results in brain damage. In addition to brain damage there comes the negative outcome such as having hallucinations, seizures, and the Alzheimer’s disease. When students do not get the appropriate amount of sleep they become more exposed to the consequences of sleep deprivation. One of the effects of sleep deprivation has to do with one’s brain. As students become more sleep deprived their brain begins to shrink. Cells begin to decreases therefore making one more disposed to the negative effects of brain damage. When the brain becomes damage students may experience seizures that could result in death. They might also even have the Alzheimer’s disease due to the degeneration of the brain. College students think that studying before exams help to remember more but this is not true since their ability to focus becomes more difficult. All-nighters have this effect where they think that everything is more difficult. This is true due to them not getting enough sleep they pay less attention to their surroundings. In the end students’ academic performance decreases overtime as they sleep less. Sleep deprivation also causes many health problems. Not getting enough sleep will make one eat more sugary foods. As a result of this they could have diabetes. Sleep deprivation plays an important role in college students since they tend to not get enough sleep due to irregular sleeping schedules.
