Introduction In recent years, the Internet and especially the social networking sites have enabled a communication revolution: the ability to send and receive timely information everywhere has changed the way we live. As an online social networking site (SNS), it collects personal information and stored in the users’ profiles, and it is extremely popular because it allows people to connect with users with similar interests, build and maintain relationships with friends, and feel more connected with their neighbors or campus. On the contrary, it is obvious that although social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn, rank high in people’s daily life, they also give rise to the unexpected disturbing matters in business. Facebook Features Facebook, a popular social networking site founded in 2004 by a Harvard sophomore, has already had more than 800 million active users by July 2011. (Giles, 2011) Like other sites, users must register with e-mail address before using the site.
But in order to attract new customers you have to incorporate such complex concepts as creativity and humour into your strategy. Even though it is common sense that things like creativity and humour are rarely found in the office of a computer expert and are more likely to be found in ad- or communication agencies, it still seems as though the companies have failed to take advantage of this. As written in The Sunday Telegraph from July 15, 2001, research shows that 90 percent of websites are developed by com-puter experts or communication inexperts as they call them. To put it bluntly, even corporations (along with individual workers) view social media as an efficient timewaster, resulting in the banning of many social networking websites. However, although it is true that social media can cause a decline in productivity when it is not used properly, “almost 90% of big companies using social media have reported ‘at least one measurable business benefit” (Mullaney). That is, almost all corporations say that social media has benefitted their business. If their employees were getting so distracted, causing an extreme decrease in productivity like the oppositions says, then most businesses wouldn’t report a
The Destructive Social Impact of the Internet The Advent of Internet communication technology is in and of itself, a positive move toward overall global advancement, but the costly social impact is what concerns Lebanese families and sociologists alike. This fear is further amplified by the anticipated social disintegration that may result. The positive aspects of the Internet: As a result of the Internet there is almost nothing that cannot be accomplished from the comfort of one's own home; grocery shopping, buying merchandise, paying bill, researching for term papers and even striking up relationships with people half way across the world.
