Drug addiction is one of the hardest things to overcome in life. Once a person becomes addicted to drugs, not only does it affect them, but it affects everyone around them. There are many options for addicts, but it is very hard to admit being an addict. Drug users should have the option of what method they would like to take in order to help them with their addiction. Options, like psychotherapy and education, can be positive for the addict and help change the attitude of the addict for the better.
Two major reasons for adolescents abusing illegal drugs are peer pressure and depression. These concepts will be expanded upon in detail in this paper. Peer pressure is one of the major reasons that teens abuse illegal drugs. Peer pressure is when another person in this age group persuades someone else to do something they don’t want to do. (Williams, Rob) This happens often among friends.
Young people are more inclined to have drug problems if they have difficulties managing their experiences and emotions, or their confidence and skills can't meet the demands of everyday living. Drug use provided an easy, negative substitute for taking control of one's life in a stressful world. Drug problems may be curbed by involving your kids in avenues like sports, the arts, or aspects of your work which are of interest to them. Family lisfe is also very important in shaping a young person's attitudes towards drugs.
Drug abuse takes an enormous toll on our society at many levels. The cost of drug abuse on our society is astronomical, not only financially but also personally, emotionally, socially and professionally. Drug abuse is the misuse or overdose of any medication or drug, including alcohol. Many people abuse drugs to deal with everyday life. “Although it is true that for most people the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can effect a person’s control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time send intense impulses to take drugs (Shannon 246)”.

In this case, the thrill of stealing and breaking the law outweighs the possibilities of getting reprimanded if caught. Since the adolescent brain is very sensitive, one’s environment also plays a large role in one’s decision to engage in criminal activity. Teenagers who grow up in poverty are more likely to become social deviants than those who grow up in families with higher income brackets. This can be explained through strain theory, the idea that people turn to deviance when they are unable to attain culturally approved goals through institutional means. People who are put at a disadvantage in terms of money and education are pressured into becoming criminals in order to become successful in society.
The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs.
In conclusion, drug addiction is caused by various factors such as family background, peer pressure, and mental illness among others. People take drugs to feel relaxed, and reduce stress among other reasons. However, excess taking of drugs can lead to drug addiction or drug addiction which causes body damage and maybe even lead to death. This paper has succeeded in looking at the various factors which cause drug addiction, some of which are family history of addiction, social environment, heredity, mental addiction, peer pressure, and escapism (Heymann and Brownsberger). The paper has also highlighted the physical addiction, symptoms and withdrawal.
