The Need for Parkland Child Development Center to Expand Do you have any idea what is the current percentage of college student with children? Is it large or just a meager percentage of the college population? The answer would probably make you think; ”[n]ational statistics indicate that among undergraduates enrolled in college in 2008, 23 percent had at least one child. Almost five percent had a child under the age of one, and 12 percent had at least on child under the age of five,” wrote Sara Rab. This is now the national reality that many college students are aspiring to graduate either in community colleges or in university even if they have children to take care of, and every institution should take their part to extend support. Parkland College is among those community college that have these students currently enrolled. One way to support these demographic among students is to have a quality child care in the campus. Thus, The Parkland College Child Development Center needs more programs and should provide more affordable services to cater the needs of students with children. Parkland Child Development Center is owned and operated by Parkland College. It is licensed by the state of Illinois to operate as a day care facility primarily to cater the children of students, faculty, staff of Parkland College, and the community. The center is accepting children from 2-5 years of age. They are open from 7:00 in the morning until 4:30 in the afternoon, from Monday to Friday. The Tuition fee is determined according to the income of the family and number of members in the household. As has been stated, there is a need to further expand the programs and services of the Parkland Child Care Center to cater more to students with child... ... middle of paper ... ...e,” To provide a nurturing, quality work environment for all college personnel and to provide professional development opportunities to help meet the challenges of changes in technology, student needs, resource-delivery systems, and District demographics.(“Parkland”). Clearly if Parkland is serious about its mission and purpose then their statement above will serve as a reminder that there are still another piece of the college demographics that needs to have an attention in order for them to succeed in their endeavor, which is to graduate and have college education. The school have to consider this proposal to meet and achieve this purpose and making sure that no one should be left behind. Therefore, The Parkland College Child Development Center needs more programs and should provide more affordable services to cater the needs of students with children.
