Summary Glory Road is a movie based on a true story in El Paso, Texas around 1966 when Coach Don Haskins broke down the color barrier by bringing seven African American players to play for the Texas Western College basketball team. He went to the college summer league in Kansas City, Kansas to check out players and try to recruit them to come to Texas Western on a full scholarship. The basketball team learned early on about Coach Don Haskins expectations, his ambition, punishments and authority. Out of all the games they played, the team lost one game. Don Haskins use to play basketball in college until his knee blew out. He became a coach and won the state championship in 1965 for a high school girl’s basketball team. There are three personal skills that a person can have, technical, human and conceptual. Northouse states (2013): “Technical skill is knowledge about and proficiency in a specific type of work or activity. Human skill is knowledge about and ability to work with people. Conceptual skills are the ability to work with ideas and concepts” (p. 44-45). Don Haskins illustrated all these skills. He knew how to play basketball from his college days and learned from coaching. He taught Orsten Artis what he called the rocker stance, which is a better way to get past your opponent and make the shot. Don Haskins was a people person and that was shown when he convinced Harry Flournoy’s mother that Texas Western was a great place for Harry to go. Don Haskins was a creative man who always thought outside of the box and his vision was to have a diverse college basketball team that could win the championship game. Leadership consists of skills and knowledge of four individual attributes. General cognitive ability is the intelligence you are born with and the reasoning skills. Crystallized cognitive ability is learned through experience, for example Don Haskins knowing what move to make against another player in basketball.
