The movie Crash reinforces stereotypes by containing ethnic slurs and racial prejudices that consistently emphasizes the social class differences among the characters in the movie. The movie powerfully fortifies stereotypes and assumptions people hear about different ethnicities through the characters actions and words throughout the movie. The purpose of the movie is its ability to catch the audience’s attention and really look into our loathsome reality of humanity, which is filled with segregation among social classes, racism, and stereotyping. For example, Farhad, and Iranian store owner, was orally insulted when buying an item at a store. The white cashier commented on Farhad’s broken English, as a result, Farhad lashed out saying, “I’m an American citizen”. The cashier also made a provocative racist slur calling Farhad “Osama”. This not only angered Farhad, but emotionally upset him to an extent. Although Farhad fell a victim of racial prejudices, he to made assumptions about other ethnicities and their stereotypes. Daniel, a Spanish locksmith, tried to repair Farhad’s lock in his store. Unfortunately, the lock wasn’t broken; Farhad needed to replace the broken door. When Farhad was informed of the broken door, he grew agitated and aggressively shouted at Daniel calling him a Mexican gang banger. First, Officer John Ryan reinforced racial stereotypes multiple times. For example, Officer John Ryan calls a health maintenance organization for his father’s illness, which he asked to speak to a supervisor when he was not pleased with the service. The representative responded, “I am my supervisor”. Officer Ryan continued to speak aggressively with the representative asking her name. The representative responded, “Shaniqua Johnson”. In a resentful way Officer Ryan responded, “Big fucking surprise that is”. Officer John Ryan assumed he was not receiving the services he pertained because the representative was incompetent and inefficient because of her race. His comment was not a direct racial comment but it was implied. Secondly, Officer John Ryan and his partner Officer Tommy Hansen, pulled over a young African American couple who was performing sexual conduct in public. Cameron and Christine, the African American couple, were asked to step out of the car and Cameron was asked to perform a sobriety test. Officer Ryan was persistent to find something illegal, other than the sexual conduct, with this couple. Officer Ryan then touched Christine inappropriately violating her rights as a citizen. In this film, characters are highlighted by the contact that occurs when disparate people are thrown together in large urban settings. Crash displays extreme instances of racism and shows how the thought, feeling, and behavior of individuals are influenced by actual, imagined, or implied presence of other human beings. My analysis will focus on Social Cognition and how people process, and apply information about other people and social situations.
All through time, the world has been racist and intolerant of people different from themselves. Countless millions have suffered due to the bigotry of people that couldn't understand change or differences among one another. There was a time when any soul that wasn't blue eyed and blonde haired in Germany, anyone with darker skin where immediately classed as inferior and not human. Even now, when you are not aware, racism is still a considerable problem. But sometimes it isn't one person being racist against another, but rather one person being racist against them self. The movie crash shows good examples of how racism against oneself, caused by fear and misunderstanding, is just as malevolent and evil as racism against another person. Fear is what makes people act racist. Farhad is one of many examples in the movie of a person who recognizes his own race and paralyzes himself through his own fear. Farhad believes that since he is Persian he is immediately being persecuted against and cheated. He flips out at the gun shop when the owner was insulting him which just furthers his fear of Americans. After the events on 9/11, which are referenced a lot in the movie, Farhad thinks that anyone who is Middle Eastern isn't welcome in America. Even after the gun shop owner was rude; his shop was destroyed by racist people who hated him. It is this same fear of being cheated because of his race that makes him very untrusting to people he doesn't know. He calls a lock smith to come fix his door because it won't lock. He immediately thinks that Daniel is trying to cheat him and steal money from him just because of his past endeavors.
Paul Haggis’ film Crash (2004), demonstrates how people can adopt a dominant and subordinate role concurrently, this is illustrated through the character Jean Cabot. When people look at Jean they see an affluent White female. As a result of the way a person looks their actions are scrutinized due to social construction. Jean is White, so people assume that she leads a charmed life. Although, Jean’s racial identity and class allows her to be a member of the dominant group, her gender she does not have as much power as White males; Jean builds her life around the racial identity that is assigned to her and participates in the social construction that plagues American communities.

Tension between the African Americans and Caucasians have been present in America since slavery. In the movie Crash (2004), race and culture are major themes that can be seen in the lives of the characters in the film. One character in particular, Cameron, a prestigious color vision director, displays the friction between two cultures. He belongs to the educated, upper class of the Los Angeles area. He is also an African American, yet he seems to have no ties with that class. He has a light-skinned wife, attends award shows, and it appears that his acquaintances are predominately white. When he and his wife, Christine, get pulled over by a racist cop, he experiences emotions of powerlessness and helplessness that he never knew he would experience due to his upbringing and place in society.
