Introduction

Bonjour! Out of all the forty-seven European countries in France, France is the most visited country in Europe. France has so many places to go such as, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame de Paris, Palace of Versailles, the French Riviera and Champs-Elysees. France today would not have been the same if it didn’t have the same history it does today.

History

The French Revolution

The French Revolution began in 1789. On May 5, 1789, a meeting was scheduled by King Louis XVI, the king of France, with the Estates General.The Estates General is made of the church, nobles and commoners. Three of the delegates from each estate made a list of complaints to give to the king. The Third Estate, the commoners, voted differently from the other two estates. That was when the Third Estate was officially named the National Assembly. The National Assembly met at Versailles, a château or manor house in Versailles, France.

On July 14, 1789, rioters stormed into the Bastille Saint Antoine, a prison. This was considered the start of the revolution. Rebellions also broke out in the villages. The main question in the National Constituent Assembly was whether to keep the king or not and different groups or ways to run the country best.

On June 1791, the royal family tried to flee the country in disguise. Later they were placed under house arrest for being accused of traitors. On September 3, 1791, the first draft of the French Constitution was made.

Maximilien de Robespierre started to gather support for a more Republican government and the trial of Louis XVI.This time was called the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror was a time of remorseless repression led by Maximilien de Robespierre. They used a guillotine to be head people duri...
