There were also B boys on the west coast who were inventing and developing their interpretations of hip hop dancing as well. These included, popping, locking, roboting, and boogaloo otherwise known as the funk styles. In the1970’s dance crews started to come together and do these new innovative dances. There are two sources of this dance and genre: one Spanish, from the colonizers, and one African, beginning in the 16th century with the importation of African slaves. The native Rumba folk dance is essentially a sex pantomime danced extremely fast with exaggerated hip movements and sensually aggressive attitude on the part of the male partner and a defensive attitude on the part of the female partner. The music is played with a staccato beat, keeping with the vigorous expressive movements of the dancers. Emerging in the mid nineteenth century from the secondary neighborhoods of Havana and Matanzas, this percussion based music and dance was not widely accepted and was, in fact, often suppressed and restricted because it was viewed as dangerous and lewd.

The New Dance was a product of several strands that interlaced together dancers’ studies and backgrounds; these strands and others were woven together in a historical, political, and societal framework. For instance, one strand of New Dance consisted of the concepts, techniques, costumes, and stage settings from around the world. These strands influenced major dancers and choreographers, such as, Isadora Duncan, Loie Fuller, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn.
Salsa has become an ever more popular dance in the United States, especially with the emergence of Latin artists including Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira. For instance, Cell Block Tango in the smash hit Chicago has a driving Latin beat. It doesn't matter if you are partying in Miami or sipping martinis in Massachusetts, Salsa has invaded America and taken a grip on the culture. Some even consider Salsa an addiction. "Perhaps it's because of the addictive quality inherent in this rhythm which fuels the desire to become part of it and express it physically..." (Tripp).
