The purpose of the Modern Olympics is to bind the nations together by using sports that everyone enjoys and to compete without discrimination. By bringing cultures together, they would earn respect for each other and have peace throughout the world (ARTICLE). By hosting the Olympics at a different location every four years, this subjects us to various cultures, gives the hosting city a chance to show pride in their city and country, and provides new jobs in the community during this event. By having their city in the spotlight for a few weeks, this could also boost tourism. Some cities will go to great lengths to have the privilege of hosting the world’s biggest sports event.

I believe that the Olympic Movement has brought peace worldwide amongst the competing athletes. The athletes have shown determination in competitiveness while still demonstrating cooperation and respect between the athletes from different countries. This seems to have brought an international friendship during the Olympic Games. I believe this is due to regardless of your background; race or language, there is still a common ground when it comes to a sport you love. However, I do not believe that the Olympics have brought peace worldwide in any other aspect but sports. Eighty-Eight countries participated in this Olympic event, which brought over 2,500 athletes that competed (Wilkey, 2014). The athletes were able to expand their knowledge about various competitors’ cultures and build lasting friendships. This cross-cultural communication brought on a deep understanding about their competitors. Not only did the competitors gain experience, but the billions of people watching from around the world on television were also able to gain knowledge and participate in cultural exchange during this
