“The Minister 's Black Veil,” There are many puzzling stories that are written throughout history with a powerful message. However the story “The minister 's black veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne shows a deeper meaning that takes place in England during the 1600’s. Citizens of a small village are spreading the word about a black veil on the minister 's face. Because of the black veil , It got the people to start feeling anxious. This short story has a powerful message in everyday lives. “The major theme of “The Minister’s Black Veil” is revealed in the Reverend Mr. Hooper’s remarks to Elizabeth when she attempts to discover why he has chosen to put on the veil. She assumes that he has decided to wear the veil only because of some
When the word “Romanticism” is said the powerful word called love comes into mind. However, in American Romanticism do not necessarily focus it on having the meaning of love. In the story, no love connection is mentioned except when Elizabeth decides to confront her husband, which ended on bad terms when she left him. “Lift the veil but once, and look me in the face,” said she. “Never! It cannot be!” replied Mr. Hooper. “Then, farewell!” said Elizabeth. she withdrew her arm from his grasp and slowly departed, pausing at the door to give one long, shuddering gaze that seemed almost to penetrate the mystery of the black veil. (Hawthorne 243) The whole book itself is very suspenseful with many events that take you a step further into the true meaning of the minister 's black veil such as events like church, funerals, dead spirits, weddings, divorcing, and death. American romanticism tends to have the protagonist to have conflict with any restraint of freedom. “Mr. hooper smiled to think that only a material emblem had separated him from happiness, through the horrors which is shadowed forth must be drawn darkly between the fondest of lovers.” (Hawthorne 243) this shows, Mr. hooper knew he wanted to be happy once again and gain freedom from the veil, but something in his gut just told him not to, told him he doesn 't deserve it. The protagonist also tends to die in a stretched or very
Every action that Mr. Hooper does in the story such as the wedding or to the funeral or even the incident that happened between him and his fiance mean something different in their own ways. The wedding that shows that you can 't have happiness comfortably without feeling guilty. The incident with Elizabeth shows how you can 't lie or be dishonest with your loved ones without getting consequences. If you truly want to keep something, think before you do something that you 'll regret and won 't be forgiven for. The funeral shows how depressed things can get because of an idiotic thing that the person has dumped on them. Because of this essay and research I finally understand what American Romanticism really means, to be honest, I just thought it had to do something with love. I really like how Nathaniel also threw in the citizens from the villages opinions on how they felt about the veil. For example, when he stated that the people started to worry and become frustrated that something bad was going to happen. Also, I liked how he connected with events that everyone has been to once in their lives . Another thing that I really liked was how the book starts off with confusion and the meaning of the story starts building up when the events happen within the village. However, Everything in the story had a symbol, I personally believe
