Over 2 billion people gained access to drinking water. Remarkable gains have been made in all the eight goals of the Millennium. In 2012, net aid disbursements from developed to developing countries reached $126 billion (UN, 2013, p. 4). Despite the significant achievements of the MDGs, the post-2015 must research precisely what can be done to reduce poverty, inequalities and follow sustainable development.
This is the central objective of the Millennium Development Goals. It directly reflects the intentions expressed in the Millennium Declaration which includes two targets, the first addresses extreme poverty and inequality –Target 1A, formerly Target 1, and the second target refers to hunger and malnutrition –Target 1C, formerly Target 2. Despite the reversal in global trends, at the regional and national level there are some encouraging signs. Between the baseline period of 1990-92 and 2004-06, 11 out of 103 developing countries already reached the target and 45 are on-track.

Back then in 2013, a report from the Congressional Budget Office estimated that 16.5 million low-wage workers would benefit from a $10.00 per hour wage; this includes 900,000 works coming up the poverty line ("The Effects of a Minimum-Wage Increase on Employment and Family Income"). Basic income program is a program where the government provides its citizens with income, regardless of whether they work. Finally, households with children could benefit by increasing the child tax credit program.
Research also shows that 47% of the world lived on less than $1.25 per day in 1990. The MDGs set out to improve this statistic by reducing the proportion to 23.5% while it actually ended up achieving even more by reducing to 22% in 2010. An indicator to measure people who suffer in conditions of extreme hunger would be the prevalence of underweight children under-five years of age. While this can also be used for the second Sustainable Development Goal 2 “Zero Hunger”, to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable
The invasion only lasted several years at a time throughout history. In 2010 the Maldives Country Report to the United Nations stated that, “it was the first country in South Asia to make the most progress, evidently achieving five of the eight goal millennium development goals” (Maldives Country Report). Target 7B: Reduce biodiversity loss, achieving, by 2010, a significant reduction in the rate of loss. Target 7C: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainability access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. Target 7D: Achieve, by 2020, a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers. Source: Culled from UNDP, (2010) 1.9 Limitations of the Study The research encountered lack of cognate literature especially indices on the level of poverty and hunger before and during the adoption of the MDGs by the United Nations and its implementation in the area of study. Although, assessment in this area has been embarked upon internationally and nationally, much has not been done at the sub-national level like the south-south zone of Nigeria.
The Millennium Summit as it was named was focused on making sure that the world becomes a better place to live in where some of the global problems are eradicated by the countries helping each other. The summit set forth eight goals which were to be achieved by 2015 and named them as the Millennium Development Goals. This was a very positive approach taken by the UNO in order to make sure that the world is a better place to live in the new millennium. The Success of the Millennium Development Goals The start of 2011 signifies that the countries are left with only 5 more years to make sure that they are able to achieve all of the 8 MDGs in order to make sure that they have made themselves a better place to live in for their people (Ditton & Lehane 2009). A fact which has to be kept in mind is that there have been a number of major events which have changed a number of global aspects.
