Disney created a scheme, involving the court system, to keep Mickey Mouse in the hands of the company instead of the public domain. Mickey Mouse was supposed to be in the public domain years ago “under the 1909 Copyright Act, entitling him to 56 years of protection under the law -- no more. In accordance with the law, his copyright was set to expire in 1984” (Crockett). Disney still wanted to make money with Mickey Mouse but, “[the] copyright law protects original works of authorship, fixed in a tangible medium, with at least a limited degree of creativity” (Martinez). Copyright laws were made to protect the individual from theft of their product or creation, while limiting the amount of money they can make on that product alone (Aboy). Walt Disney created the American fantasy from thoughts pulled out of the far reaches of his imagination. He was a man who had never let go of his inner child. By simply reaching for that inner child he created every child's dream in the form of a simple talking mouse. That mouse became his trademark. Mickey was a trade mark to be used to his advantage though. With his fame and money gained from Mickey he could go on to do heroic things like build schools, work to aid his country during war, build family friendly theme parks, and make unforgettable movies. Walt Disney once said "The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing(ww2.netnitco.net Walt Disney's Great Quotes)." That is exactly what Disney has done and what all Americans should strive to do. Throughout his life Disney taught the world that "It's kind of fun to do the impossible(ww2.netnitco.net Walt Disney's Great Quotes)." If all of America strove to do the impossible everyday then every American would soon fit in beside Walt Disney under the category of an American hero.

Walt Disney rose up from humble beginnings. His childhood was anything but stable as his family moved throughout the Midwest because of his father’s work. Although his strings of early letdowns made it seem like success would never come, Walt Disney became highly successful in animation. During the 1930’s, Disney became determined to create a feature length animated film. Although many told him he would not be able to produce an animated cartoon that would hold an audience beyond seven minutes long, he continued to try. “Only a few years later, in 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a major success.” (Source 1) Walt Disney created seven noticeably individual personalities, something that had never before been accomplished in animation. Following this film came a steady flow of animated features including Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and 101 Dalmatians. But animation was not the only thing that helped Walt Disney become a big hit. He dreamed of having a park in which would not contain the menace of carnival freaks, barkers and thrill rides. He wished to have a park which would attract many different ages of children. Although Walt Disney died in 1966, his dream came true after his death. Five years later his Florida Park opened, and Walt Disney World became the uncompromised and unfet...
In reviewing the vast corporation of the Walt Disney Company and all that it has to offer, one profound statement made by Walt Disney himself comes to the forefront, “I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse” (Walt, n.d.). Walt Disney influenced technology. Without Walt we would not be as advanced into technology as we are. His first animation creation was The Alice Comedies with the company, Laugh-O-Grams. The Alice Comedies did not end up very well and ended up causing the company to go bankrupt. Most people who did not know him thought he was a failure and would give up, nut that was the complete opposite. After his first downfall he partnered with his brother, Roy. Walt and Roy set up in their uncle’s garage and got back to work together. They produced Alice in Cartoonland which was similar to the story line of Walt’s early cartoon called The Alice Comedies. With Alice in Cartoonland Walt and Roy were finally noticed by an agency in New York. Next, Walt created an animated drawing of a human-like mouse named Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse was debuted on Steamboat Willie. Steamboat Willie was the world’s first synchronized sound cartoon. Cartoons at this time were just usually animation with no sound, but Walt introduced something entirely new with synchronized sound and animations. Steamboat Willie was Walt’s first big hit. Steamboat Willie was publicized on November 18, 1928 at Colony Theater in New York. Hundreds of people came to see it. After Walt’s first big hit he soon was publicly ...

Walter Disney was the entrepreneur who had the creative skills. Knowing his limitations, he let other people do what he couldn't do good enough himself. This is an important skill, as it leads to quality products being made. The step from making short cartoons to doing full length cartoons and later live-action movie production is quite natural. What is not that natural and straight forward, and at the same time significant to the success of Disney, is the way in which Disney started to integrate vertically when they created the Buena Vista Distribution. The vertical integration along with the horizontal diversification has allowed for the exceptional building and exploitation of the huge synergies that exists in Disney, and which has to be regarded as the main reason for the success of Disney.
The man, the dreamer, the artist, the creator, producer, the pioneer, and the developer; Walt Disney accomplished building his own empire along with his legacy that continues to grow every day. Every individual has a story about what drives them to be the person they are today and will be tomorrow. Personally, I love his impressive movies and alluring theme parks. Walt Disney has played an integral part of my family’s life. In fact, my daughter became engaged at the end of Main Street, in a fairy-tale moment in front of the enchanted Cinderella’s Castle, in the Magic Kingdom theme park for her birthday over the holidays. Just about everyone has some knowledge of Walt Disney’s incredible endeavors. However, how many people can say that they have knowledge of the man Disney was before creating Mickey Mouse and what follows?
