In "The Mexico Reader: History, Culture, Politics," Joel Poinsett's take on the status of the Mexican people compared to other countries intrigued me. Poinsett's pessimistic view of the Mexicans really caught my eye. Poinsett focused on a majority of the negative traits of Mexico. One of these traits include their lack of knowledge and an education. The author does not hold back when comparing the education in Mexico to the education of other nations such as Mexico's parent country Spain. Poinsett places blame on the Spanish for the lack of knowledge in Mexico. He discusses how the Spanish strictly restricted Mexico from interacting in trade with other countries.
