The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on February 2, 1848 and ended the Mexican-American War. The goal of the treaty was to allegedly establish peace between Mexico and the United States and form a “friendship” between the two as well. However, in the context of the treaty Mexico was forced to sign rather than forming a treaty on friendly terms. The treaty was significant as it resulted in a political border between the two countries. This political border, while artificial, had a real impact in the lives of Mexicans. The treaty was responsible for the separation of the Mexican community.
