There are many competitive businesses in the world that advertise appealing products with not just high quality but are also available at affordable prices. It is not often that you come across a company with both of these characteristics along with a touching story and heart- warming values. TOMS shoes and eyewear company is one example of the latter.
According to the TOMS website, the founder of this company is Blake Mycoskie. Mycoskie first visited Argentina to compete in the second season of the reality television show, The Amazing Race, in 2002. Four years later, he made Argentina his choice of destination for vacation purposes. During this visit, he came across many beautiful children, with no shoes on their feet, who touched his heart. Mycoskie noticed that the lack of shoes was a prevailing issue for children in Argentina and other developing countries that had a major impact on the health of these children. After this experience, he decided to make it his mission to help children in need in developing countries, such as Argentina, by providing them with shoes. He accomplished this mission, by making the “one for one” model his foundation when creating the company now known as TOMS.
TOMS company policy is that for every shoe purchased by a consumer, the same shoe is sent to a child in need. Mycoskie does not just stop there by providing a child with one shoe but continues helping that child throughout their childhood years. Blake Mycoskie said, “ I was so overwhelmed by the spirit of the South American people, especially those who had so little, and I was instantly struck with the desire -responsibility- to do more.” Indeed, more he did. The AT&T commercial that advertised TOMS as well, focused on the company’s core purpose and sent a powerful message to viewers nationwide. The commercial included the founder, or chief of shoe giver as he calls himself, Blake Mycoskie speaking intently about his company and love for what he does. Though it included the services AT&T provides, it did not take away from the heart-warming story of this company. Included in this particular commercial, was also the world-wide event known as TOMS One Day Without Shoes: Barefoot Walk.
This social event consists of individuals going barefoot for a day to raise awareness about the prevailing issue of children in developing countries. The participants of this walk range from individuals of different ages as well as occupations.
