For instance, Macduff undergoes shock and disbelief when he figures out the death of his whole family. As the story progresses, Macbeth’s cruelty grows patently when he declares, “The castle of Macduff I will surprise; / Seize upon Fife; give to the edge o’ the sword / His wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls / That trace him in his line” (Macbeth IV, i, 165-168). He orders to kill Macduff’s innocent women and children to eradicate a threat to his power. He also uses the devastating event to send a message that he does not fear Macduff. Later, when Macduff stumbles upon the awful and disturbing incident within his fortress, he manifests his wretchedness when he notes, “Sinful Macduff, / They were all struck for thee!” (IV, iii, 230-231).
Poe’s obvious distaste for the wealthy is represented through this quote. Poe’s obsession with death comes into play in the end of the story, where the “Red Death” enters dressed as a Plague victim, and all inside the castle are killed. Poe mocks the prosperous with the ridiculous things the Prince provided when they were in the castle. By ultimately ending the lives of the prosperous, it gives the reader a look into how Poe feels about the wealthy. This parallelism to Poe’s tragic life allows the reader to see how death has become a theme of Poe’s personal life, not only in the story.
The root cause of all her issues was the death of her love as well as her beloved father's death. The emotion of the song perfectly states Ophelia's emotions through the lyrics. Nevertheless, Claudius attempted to poison his nephew Hamlet with his poisoned wine. As an alternative, the Queen drinks the poisoned wine and dies tragically.
The death of Macduff’s family made Macduff fight harder than ever, in order to avenge his family's name. The messenger tried to warn Lady Macduff about the attack, but it was too late. The murders entered, they first killed Macduff’s son, on the brink of him dying he manages to say “He has killed me, mother. / Run away, I pray you” (4.2.80-81). Macbeth embodies the flaw of making impulsive decisions.
Victor makes it his mission to destroy the monster, who has been ruining his life. The monster threatens to be there with Victor on his wedding night. Victor interprets this as a threat against his own life, but instead finds his wife, Elizabeth, murdered. "She was there, lifeless and inanimate, thrown across the bed, her head hanging down and her pale and distorted features half covered by her hair"(179). The next paragraph discusses how loss of innocence was portrayed through setting.
All of these problems are shown in a person who is mentally ill. Macbeth hears his prophecy from three witches which starts his mental illness, along with Lady Macbeth pressuring him to kill the king. After Macbeth kills the king, things start to get out of hand; Macbeth gets over ambitious and wants to kill more people, whatever it takes. Lady Macbeth asks for her womanhood to be taken so that she will not feel guilty, but ends up feeling more guilty than ever. Subsequently, she kills herself to escape the guilt, and causes her husband great pain. These tragic examples and many others show that mental illness is a societal issue, and it is shown throughout the story of Macbeth.
Besides the fact that all the main characters in both stories die, its how they die thats interesting. Because Goneril wants to get Edmund, she poisons her sister Regan. Hamlets uncle wants to poison Hamlet, but by mistake he poisoned his wife, Hamlets mother. Hamlet by mistake kills his uncle servant Polonius. Because of the death of her father Ophelia (Polonius daughter) goes insane and later kills herself.
Macbeth stole the throne of Scotland from the rightful Prince Malcolm, and threw the country into chaos through his evil reign. His own conscious eats away at him until he reveals that he had murdered people to get to his position after which he is killed in a battle for control of Scotland and his reign ends. Through the actions and behavior of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and their associations with fear, the reader learns that even the strongest of people have fears. Sleep is a word that is thought to be associated with rest, and being tired. But, when used through Macbeth it tends to take a whole new meaning.
