“And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the gay. And the flames of the tripod expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” (Poe). This quote, being the final three sentences of this piece, describe how it encompasses some of the attributes vital to a key piece of literature that defines Gothicism. The gothic literature era contains attributes that are generally dark, eerie, gruesome, and supernatural. The “Masque of the Red Death” depicts this attribute very well. When the seven rooms are introduced, some are described as being bright, the final, and most important, room is not. The story states that “the seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries…” (Poe). This is a good use of imagery, allowing the reader to imagine what the seventh room looks like. The final room is meant to resemble death. Gothic settings are not just dark, but include gothic architecture. The clock is located in the room that defines gothic literature the best, which adds the idea that the clock will play a role. Because the rooms are symbolic of time and the clock is located in the room that resembles death, the clock resembles the time of life; which is shown with, “And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last gay.” (Poe). This quote uses personification to give the clock life, comparing it to a human’s life. The story ends with the sound of the clock ending when the last man is killed.
