The major motion picture, Pearl Harbor, reflects upon a war that occurred a few decades ago rather than the documentary filmed very shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Both movies depict the attack as one that will live on in infamy, but the documentary takes a spiteful vengeance towards Japan because it was filmed during a time of hatred towards the Japanese, our enemy. While the newer movie has given us time to reflect upon the war and realize that we both underestimated the enemy and knew very little about the other. While one movie was in black and white and the other was in color with millions spent on the fighting scenes, they both depict the same war. I felt that there was too much of the love story in the newer film than actual historical figures and importance. Real historical figures Col. James H. Doolittle Alec Baldwin and Doris "Dorie" Miller Cuba Gooding, Jr. in minor roles that should have been given more screen time are sprinkled throughout the film, adding a touch of authenticity to the daring-do of the main fictional characters portrayed by Affleck and Hartnett. The film that was in black and white attempted to destroy the Japanese reputation by showing all the faults of the Japanese people and making their leaders out to be complete tyrants and the bombers to be lunatics who would die for these tyrants. 1941 December 7th was the day in which will live in infamy and also controversy. The Attack at Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack on the American fleet at the at the navy base in pearl harbor at Hawaii. Japanese attackers us hard and the planes came in waves, the first hit us at 7:53 and the second hit us at 8:55. Nothing but chaos was left. 2,403 dead, 188 planes. But was this attack really a surprise? Did we really know about it before hand? Or did we just really be bombarded with a Japanese surprise attack.
Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor was intended to be a preventive act in order to keep the United States Navy from intruding on their military plans. Why Japan would try to take on a force they knew they could not overcome still stands in question. Japan was already engaged in a four-year war in China and debating an attack on the Soviet Union, so why engage in a war with a country with tremendous industrial advantage? The United States was not only on the opposite side of the world but had a much stronger military force. The United States had more military weapons, tactics, and forces than other countries. When attacking Pearl Harbor Japan opted to fight a war with an enemy that had the capability to wage an unstoppable war against them.
Pearl Harbor is easily one of the most disastrous events that occurred on American soil. It was a deliberate attack against the United States from Japan. Before December 7, 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked, America had decided not to get involved in European affairs, which included the beginning of World War II. However, once the United States saw how much Britain and the Soviet Union were suffering from fighting with the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan), America felt obligated to help in some way to help without actually entering the war. Weapons, money, and food were sent over seas to help aid them in any way it could. Roosevelt approached congress and asked for a declaration of war against Japan. Pearl Harbor affected many events that occurred in World War II. After two waves of attacks on Pearl Harbor, more than two thousand American soldiers and sailors, and another one thousand were wounded. The Japanese destroyed about twenty American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and almost 200 airplanes. It has commonly been wondered whether this attack could’ve been prevented, and after much examination, it is clear that this attack could’ve never occurred. In his “Day of Infamy speech”, Roosevelt himself said, “It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago.” There were many causes for the attack on Pearl Harbor, stemming from bad relations between Japan and the United States. Prior to the attack, the United States treated Japan disrespectfully in many ways, creating tension and discomfort between the two countries. Countless warnings and clues were interpreted of an upcoming attack, but were not taken as serious of a threat as they were, and weren’t sent to any naval bases. On the day of the assault, no one was prepared to defend themselves or fight. There were many events that provoked Japan to attack Pearl Harbor, and the whole event could have been prevented, if it hadn’t been for many actions of the US.
In 1941, one of the largest American military defeats occurred. An entire naval fleet was destroyed, hundreds were killed, all before nine A.M. on a Sunday morning. The US did not have any knowledge of this attack, mostly because of their own ignorance, partially because of the military strategies of their Japanese opponents. The Empire of Japan had strategically planned and executed a swift blow to the state of Hawaii, located in the mid-Pacific Ocean. Hawaii was our first line of defense from any westerly attack of an Asian country. By the end of the almost 2 hour ordeal, our Naval and Air Corps assets’ were brutally crippled preventing the ability of the US to conduct an immediate retaliation. In this study we will cover many of the events that led up to that moment in time, the actual attack and show the result that were to follow.

This topic was very interesting. .The Pearl Harbor played a major historical role in World War II by galvanizing US support against the Axis. Previously, the US had generally supported Britain but was dissuaded by public opinion from direct involvement. By attacking the United States at Pearl Harbor, Japan brought America into the war. President Roosevelt knew beforehand that something somewhere would happen, but Congress and the American people balked at entering the war. Japan's attempt was to destroy American naval power in the Pacific figuring it would take a couple of years to rebuild the fleet. This would allow them to conquer the Australian Archipelago and extend their empire. Luckily, the Enterprise was on maneuvers at sea and no American carrier was damaged in the attack. This set the stage for America entering the war and focusing its industrial might against the Axis Powers. the topic that entertained me was “How did Japan plan the attack on Pearl Harbor”This entertained me because i didn’t know how they had every thing planed out.Also when i was watching the videos in class it got me more entertained and i was like “WOW”.That is why i have choice this topic.
Pearl Harbor carries on with books and even in the movies from generation to generation. The United States suffered defeat at Pearl Harbor, but united together to pursue victory. The film stays exceedingly accurate to the history of Pearl Harbor in comparison with Prange's book.
