Over time, the importance of the All Star game has shifted greatly. It used to be played for the sole reason that fans could watch the best players in the league compete against each other on the same field. The outcome did not matter because the final score did not affect any team’s season. In 2003 there was a change to a rule in the All Star game. It was decided that the winning team, either the American League or the National League, would be granted home field advantage for the World Series.1 The new rule triggered a lot of controversy and it is still being debated to this day. There are some people that agree with the change and there are some people that disagree. The Major League Baseball season is 162 games long and I believe …show more content…
In previous seasons, home field advantage was alternated every other year.1 Rob Manfred, the current commissioner of Major League Baseball, agrees that there needs to be a motive for the players to want to win. He feels that awarding the winner of the All Star game with home field advantage is the best way to keep it meaningful. He recently stated, “Everything in life is relative. I would say if you had to choose between, let 's alternate every other year and let 's award home-field advantage based on the All-Star Game, we 're moving in the right …show more content…
Home field advantage should be earned by the team with the best overall record. It is not fair to rely on one game during the season because it impacts something so important. In baseball, players go on hot and cold streaks all of the time. Sometimes pitchers have bad games and give up a lot of runs. The All Star game should be a time for everyone to have fun. Whether a player strikes out 3 times or hits 3 homeruns they still deserved to be there. Players should not have to go out on the field knowing that if they don’t perform well they are hurting their chances of home field advantage in the World Series. Another problem with making the All Star game so important is that coaches do not play the game to win. Coaches are constantly making substitutions because it is the goal for every player on the roster to get in the game. In addition, in the MLB, it is a rule that there needs to be at least one player from each team on the roster. The argument with this rule is that some teams may not have a player that deserves to make the All Star team. If a game really means so much, coaches should be able to pick their
Ultimately, there are three exceptionally important criteria for deciding on good candidate for an expansion team. The first criterion is that the stadium must be controlled or owned by the baseball team. The stadium is a crucial aspect because most of the team’s revenue is generated in relation to the stadium. This stadium revenue comprises of ticket sales, parking, merchandise and concessions. Thus, without a stadium, the team will not be able to generate a stable source of revenue. The second criterion is that local ownership must have strong roots within the community. Without ties to the community, fan attendance could decrease. This is because fans could eventually perceive that the owner(s)’s only goal for the MLB franchise was to be profitable. The third criterion is the city must have long-term political support in the community. It is vital to have political support in order to gain financial support throughout the team’s years of existence, especially in tax payer monies. Particularly, this is significant when the team experiences issues or fights that involve the stadium and the land around the stadium. If there is a lack of political support, the expansion teams will not be able to obtain enough for money for stadium renovations, repairs, or to build new stadiums for the same team within the same city. This circumstance was apparent when the New York Yankees used tax revenue generated by New York City to fund the building of their brand new stadium for the 2009 season. Therefore, expansion committees believe it is necessary to confirm that the prospective cities will have enough political support because this political factor will help stabilize and financially support the prosp...
Critics say that it takes away from the way the game is supposed to be played. The rule, actually brings out the pureness of the game. It lets the hitters concentrate on hitting and the pitchers on pitching.

A salary cap gives all the teams an equal chance to sign players. It also keeps teams with a lot of money not able to acquire every all-star they want , or any player who is a free agent. Some Major League Baseball teams like the Anahiem Angels and the Atlanta Braves are owned by very wealthy people and companies. The Anaheim Angels are owned by Disney.(Worisnop, 128) So with no surprise the Angels can produce a team which can be very competitive, and have several all-star players. Just recently they exercised this advantage by signing Mo Vaughn for ninety million dollars over seven years.(Antonen, 2) There were at least four other teams that wanted to sign this all-star, but the Angels easily had the money, and outbid everyone who wanted to sign him. If there was a salary cap in Major League Baseball then the Angels would have thought twice about giving that much money to one player. With the its roster for one year. So giving one player 12.8 million dollars for one year does not really make sense if the salary cap is fifty million dollars a year. That would leave only 37.2 million dollars for the twenty-four other players, which equals each player getting on average a little less than one and a half million dollars a year.
In the last decade, almost all the big cities in the United States, and a few small cities as well, have battled with each other for the right to host big league franchises. Cities spend hundreds of millions of dollars to build new stadiums and offer enticements to private franchise owners. Politicians often push for stadiums and other favors to teams despite not having support from neighborhoods and general opposition across the whole city, especially where these high dollar stadiums would be built.
...ercent grantees that the best teams will face off in the World Series. Baseball has been a game of adaptation, with the end of the dead ball era by putting cork in the ball, the games populatirty grew because the chance of home runs and harder hit balls made the game more entertaining and interactive. By adding steroid testing, the playing field has been leveled so that no one person has a distinct advantage over another. Both are examples of how the game has developed to benefit both the fans and to the players. The whole world is evolving into a time of equality and fairness and baseball is the last of the major sports in America to adapt this rule of reviewing plays that are controversial.
Wild Card Playoff - Costas says kill the wild-card and give the best record in each league a first-round bye. His argument revolves around the importance of pennant races to the game of baseball. The wild-card spot negates any pennant races, since second place wins a post-season spot, too. He says that the end of the season is more exciting without the wild-card.
In terms of racial inequality in baseball there have been many eras of integration. Baseball originally is seen as America’s national game belonging to the white men of America. However, throughout history there have been steps taken in recognizing and integrating those groups deemed “less favorable” by the American community. These groups include German immigrants, Irish immigrants, African Americans, Latinos, Native Hawaiians, Native Americans, and Asians. America used the game of baseball as a tool to indoctrinate the American ideals and values of teamwork, working hard, and collaborating for the greater good into the cultures of the “uncivilized world.” These groups used baseball as a medium to gain acceptance into the American community as racially equal counterparts.
Baseball has been of the longest living sports in our world today. The game started with the idea of a stick and ball and now has become one of the most complex sports known in our society. Several rules and regulations have been added to help enhance the game for everyone. Although baseball has endured several issues during its history and development of the game the game has still been a success throughout the world.
At its height the Negro Baseball League teams competed in World Series and the elite had the chance to compete in All-Star games. The East-West All-Star game, hosted by Negro Leagues, soon became a tradition at Chicago's Comiskey Park. The game was played annually, and soon contributed greatly to the ever-growing national popularity of Negro League baseball during the 1930’s. Gus Greenlee conceived the idea of the Negro League All-Star Game in 1933 and the game quickly became black baseball's most popular attraction. The game showed off the Negro Leagues best talent from each region and regularly packed Cominsky Park. In contrast to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the Negro league version made it a tradition to play at the same venue every year, generating camaraderie and a sense of pride.
The history of baseball has made cultures in America come together more than any other sport. It brings cities together to watch a common game known as “The American Pastime”, but the game is changing along with the world around us. Are the changes good or bad? One thing is for sure through all this. Baseball has become interesting along with being informative.
...all. One of the things the game and the players have always done is give back. They’ve never taken for granted what they have. To make a lasting contribution to these communities is really important to these guys”. What can be found intriguing about this quote is that when one keeps in mind that this charity or volunteer work was done during the MLB All-Star game weekend, when MLB players are normally focused on playing well and winning the All-Star game so that their league whether it be the American League or National League wins home field advantage in the World Series. One can thus see that the game of baseball is not just about pleasing its fans based off of the performances of MLB players on the field during games, but it is also about helping out the community in an effort to once again be able to promote the general well-being of others in any way possible.

...s what players would make the team, and they would receive prizes for the accuracy of their guesses. The excitement of the all-star game and the prize incentives were very appealing to people, even during the Great Depression. As a result, the all-star game, which is still played today, contributed greatly to saving baseball during the Great Depression.
