For my paper I chose to study Buffardi and Campbell’s study on narcissim and the correlation the two have one another their study was published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and it was titled “Narcissism and Social Networking Web Sites.,” written by Laura E. Buffardi and W. Keith Campbell. In the study, Buffardi and Campbell introduce research that examines how narcissism is externalized on a social networking Web site like Facebook (1303). Facebook, the social networking website that was used in this study gives people the opportunity to create an online persona through their own personal Web page. This persona that a user creates is an area that is embedded with things such as pictures and personal interests as well as an opportunity to reflect one’s life for the world to see. Buffardi and Campbell mention that, a person’s Web page contains information that relates to one-self, embedded links to other members pages, and the added ability to interact with other members from all over the world (1303). The reason Facebook was chosen was for its popularity among the masses and the fact that structurally it was the most consistent across the board.
The study that was conducted by Laura E. Buffardi and W. Keith Campbell was based on a total number of 129 undergraduate students who gave permission to save their Facebook pages to be used in the present research, and another 128 undergraduate students who were the raters or observers in this investigation (1306). The participants were then asked to display their Facebook profile page and the information was also saved by the experimenter. The human condition cannot be based on such things, granted I do believe that in a way this experiment did open an avenue for discussion in possibly looking at other characteristics that could help diagnose something like narcissism or other mental conditions. What I find most interesting about this experiment is more-so in the fact of me critiquing it because regardless of what Buffardi and Campbell’s results “may” have shown I’m still in some form or fashion biased based on my own personal beliefs anyhow. So really in the end the question I pose is would I be a narcissist for disagreeing with the results or would I truly be one for agreeing with it.

Social networking sites promote the sharing of personal information in the public format. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter promote the oversharing of details of personal lives. Posts on these platforms may vary in regards to what one may be watching, or having for breakfast, or it may include pictures of one’s latest vacation or nights out with friends at a local bar. (10) Since personal information can be shared very frequently and with ease, consumers are more likely to disregard the restraint they normally would use when sharing information in regards to personal matter. What happens when Narcissism takes over a generation? Is that generation the only generation who is affected? A narcissistic generation does not happen on it 's own. Majority of Millennial 's characteristics are negative but not entirely negative. However, Generation Me only values themselves. Their overemphasis on self-esteem is well intentioned but often leads to narcissism. Both terms can be avoided with proper treatment.
Here’s a question, how often do you check your social media profile’s notification? Based on a research conducted, it is revealed that, Facebook users around the world logged into their account approximately 42,000 years of human time each day (Gutierrez, 2013). An article written by The New York Times stated that the current generations are becoming narcissistic and it is believed that social media are among the plausible factors that promotes it (Quenqua, 2013). However, how true can this statement be? Many researches have proven that social media is not the main cause of narcissism. It has been demonstrated via the real role of social media, the co-relation between social pressure and narcissism, the failure to conclude acceptance of criticism instead of narcissism, the current generation trend and the real problem of narcissism.
Today, our culture demands us to be perfect, thin, powerful, successful, smart, extraordinary, but when people begin to try achieving them, we start labeling them as narcissists. The problem is that it is impossible for anyone to please everyone. Brown defines narcissism as simply a “fear of never feeling extraordinary enough to be noticed, to be lovable, to belong, or to cultivate a sense of purpose” (22). Before giving out labels, it is wise to practice asking ourselves questions to clear the intentions and reasons of someone’s behavior. For example, teenagers posting pictures of themselves online to gain some attention reveals that the culture has taught them that they are as lovable as the number of likes and comments they get on social media. Negative feedback roots into negative thinking about vulnerability and causes them to shut themselves down and never show their real selves again. According to Webber, narcissists are normal people victimized by “an overused label”; in fact, narcissists have healthy egos who “happen to indulge in the occasional selfie, and talk about their accomplishments” (Webber 54). She strategically organizes the quotes of many experts to give a more favourable sense of the word, clarifying that narcissism not only makes people feel good about themselves, but it also boosts confidence and helps individuals “take risks, like seeking a promotion or asking out an attractive stranger” (Webber 55). She also makes the persuasive point that individuals are more narcissistic in their earlier years of adulthood, making an ethical observation that “young adulthood is a time when people are largely free of responsibilities, either to their family of origin or the family they will eventually establish” (Webber 60, 61). These are the times when people are free to pursue an independent life and make independent decisions without the restraints of family to hold them back. According to the Mayo Health Clinic, “Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. The 21st century has brought a lot of modern ideas, innovations, and technology. One of these is social media. The invention of Facebook has completely changed the way we communicate with one another. Instant messaging, photo sharing, and joining online groups have created a way for families and friends to connect. Some argue that Facebook is the greatest invention however, while it is seemingly harmless, Facebook has created an invasion of privacy. The accessibility of Facebook and its widespread use has created privacy problems for users, teens, and interviewees by allowing easy control to viewers.
When someone “friends you” on Facebook, it doesn’t automatically mean that you have some special relationship with that person. In reality it really doesn’t mean that you now have the intimacy and familiarity that you have with some offline friends. And research shows that people don’t commonly accept friend requests from or send them to people they don’t really know, favoring instead to have met a person at least once (Jones). A key part of interpersonal communication is impression management, and some methods of new media allow people more tools for presenting themselves than others. SNSs in many ways are podiums for self-presentation. Even more than blogs, web pages, and smartphones, the atmosphere on a SNS like Facebook and Twitter enables self-disclosure in a focused way and permits others who have access to ones profile to see their other friends. This merging of different groups of people that include close friends, family, acquaintances, and friends of friends, colleagues, and strangers can present issues for self-presentation. Once people have personal, professional, and academic contacts in their Facebook network the growing diversity of social media networks creates new challenges as people try to engage in impression management
Facebook holds several uses and features for its users. When one joins a social networking site, they make a unique profile that showcases information about him or her, like a birthday or a current relationship status. From there, he or she can “add friends” that they can search for on the website. The popular site, Facebook.com, has amassed more than one billion registrants since it started in February 2004. It is another social networking site, just like MySpace.com and Xanga.com, which is common to High School and College students. But this is no ordinary site; people’s lives literally revolve around Facebook. I have a Facebook account and log in at least once a day. I personally believe that Facebook is a fun and interactive site. However, some students may not feel that same way because they have encountered some negative aspects, aside from Facebook’s legal problems.

Furthermore, browsing sites such as Facebook may lead to low morale, as people begin to measure their self-worth with the amount of “likes” they receive. Ironically, although social media sites boast their ability to connect people, they mainly separate society even more as people become isolated behind their screens. For instance, Sana Rouis examines that Facebook has no significant effect on students’ achievement (296). In her research, she surveyed a large group of 203 undergraduate students and employed two different types of data analysis (298).
