“For books are more than books, they are the life, the very heart and core of ages past, the reason why men worked and died, the essence and quintessence of their lives.” I believe this is one of the greatest quotes written by Amy Lowell. I chose to write about Amy Lowell only because she looked interesting through her writing. I loved the fact that she was a rebel. She had a reputation for violating old-fashioned morals. She flaunted her obesity, smoked cigars, used swearing in her everyday language, and even had a same sex lover. It is like she wanted to be one of the guys, which is interesting considering the fact that women were not supposed to act like that back then. It was rumored that she had a romantic relationship with the actress Ada Dwyer Russell, who may have inspired some of her erotic poems. She definitely stood out to me.
Amy Lowell was an American imagist poet. She died only a year before she won the Pulitzer Prize. She had written over 650 poems. Amy Lawrence Lowell was the daughter of a wealthy Boston family. She had never attended college because her family thought that it was not proper for a woman. During this time, women were seen as inferior to men, meaning they were stuck with the stereotype of housewife and mother. It wasn’t until the late 1920’s women started getting privileges that were equal to men, like the ninetieth amendment which enabled women to vote. With that being said, she took to her father’s massive library and taught herself. She took control of her own education, spending her free time in the library. She lived during the Victorian Era where expectations of women were very strict. Clothing showed one’s social status and was much known for being uncomfortable. Women were supposed to wear ...

I chose Amy Lowell mostly because she stood out from others. Women were supposed to act a certain way back then and I love the fact that she went against it. She wanted to be like one of the guys, only better. I also admire her for not accepting the role that society and her family looked for. I really appreciated her independence. She had such a wealthy and care free life, it was nice to see her creating a name for herself instead of under her family. She did the exact opposite of what everyone expected and did what made her happy. A lot of her poems were so short and sweet but to the point. I think that everyone who likes a person who stands out in society would enjoy her work. It’s so interesting to see something different and not someone acting like everyone else, that’s boring.
In both poems, certain details of the characters’ lives give the reader an impression that the women live pleasant, well-to-do lives, while others give an idea that the women are suffering; this contrast helps to depict the confusion and inner struggles the women are facing. Although they live lives of riches and glamour, they long for something that surpasses the material aspects of life, allowing them to experience freedom from their many social confinements as women. Lowell writes many details in "Patterns" that lead the reader to believe the woman described is upper class:
Best remembered for her books about the March family, especially her children’s masterpiece, Little Women, Alcott also wrote sensational novels and thrillers for adults. She was a very creative, difficult, and willful girl who was both moody and loyal.
''The deepest feeling always shows itself in silence; not in silence, but restraint.'' (Mariannne Moore 552) Marianne Moore a well know modern American poet of her time created remarkable poems with greater meanings behind the scenes. Marianne Moore uses symbolism and structure to bring out the flaws in society. Marianne Moore's life childhood, college encounters, career experiences and achievements made her the remarkable person that she became.
Anne Bradstreet is often praised as being one of the first feminist voices in colonial America which, perhaps, is misleading. Her poetry adhered to the standard themes and styles of her male contemporaries, glorifying male-dominated society and never questioning the authority of the men that controlled her life both personally and spiritually. She was content to be the property of her father, husband, and Puritan society as a whole. However, because she worked within the confines of the Puritan era's gender roles and literary techniques, Anne Bradstreet was able to shed light on the oft overlooked existence of women within the society.
Emily Dickinson was a different type of poet that has people thinking of things people would never think about in another author’s work. Dickinson was born and raised with the rich life with only two siblings. Her work was inspired by her much of her childhood and the people she interacted with. An example of Dickinson’s different type of style is, “ So I conclude that space and time are things of the body and have little or nothing to do with ourselves. My Country is Truth,”(Berry) Emily Dickinson did not share hardly any of her writing when she was alive. According to Berry,” With the exception of six poems that appeared in newspapers at various times, and another that appeared in a collection of stories and poems in 1878, Emily Dickinson never published her work,” (Berry) Even though Dickinson wrote differently, does not mean she had a different lifestyle compared to most people today. Dickinson was an outstanding American poet where her childhood, family and friends, religion, and education inspired most of her poetry.
Laura Ingalls Wilder was an influential author that has inspired many children around the world. Her books have told the tales of her remarkable story and have shown what it is like to be an American Pioneer.
Elizabeth Browning was a great and famous writer of her time. She put in what she has gone through with her emotions and how she felt of the issue and plugged it into her dairy that now people of our society read now. She was a great inspiration to many other writers and artist of her time period. In my opinion, I believe she describe her feeling so well and not a lot of great people have the gift to express herself like she did in her work.
Edna St. Vincent Millay grew up in a small town in Maine. She was always encouraged by her mother to pursue her writing and musical talents. She finished college and moved to New York City where she lived a fast pace life pursuing acting and play writing. Her liveliness, independence, and sexuality inspired her writing styles and gave her poetry a freshness that no others had. She is famous for writing sonnets like “What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why.” This poem holds many metaphors and symbols pertaining to how certain seasons make people feel. She compares the feeling of nature with her personal feelings of being alone after having so many lovers.
After almost four decades ago Anne Bradstreet wrote her two now famous poems “To My Dear Loving Husband” and “Upon the Burning of Our House”. Today, we recognize these poems as one of the first women’s writing to be published. Although today we admire Anne Bradstreet’s poems four decades ago people did not have the same opinion. With the Puritans strongly disapproving of women writers think that at one point the Puritan community found Anne Bradstreet’s poems praise worthy because in her poems and writing she shows over and over how she loves her husband and how she loves God even after he was responsible for burning down her house and all of her possessions. Puritans would give Anne Bradstreet’s poems praise for example, “I prize thy love
“Although Emily Dickinson is known as one of America’s best and most beloved poets, her extraordinary talent was not recognized until after her death” (Kort 1). Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she spent most of her life with her younger sister, older brother, semi-invalid mother, and domineering father in the house that her prominent family owned. As a child, she was curious and was considered a bright student and a voracious reader. She graduated from Amherst Academy in 1847, and attended a female seminary for a year, which she quitted as she considered that “’I [she] am [was] standing alone in rebellion [against becoming an ‘established Christian’].’” (Kort 1) and was homesick. Afterwards, she excluded herself from having a social life, as she took most of the house’s domestic responsibilities, and began writing; she only left Massachusetts once. During the rest of her life, she wrote prolifically by retreating to her room as soon as she could. Her works were influenced ...

Society has redefined the role of woman by their works thru poetry that has changed their life
Even though Amy was a drug addict and alcohol abuser, She still managed to release platinum-selling albums. Originating from the little known town of Southgate in north London, her inspiring music helped rise the popularity for female musicians in the industry.
The mentally ill often live in darkness, however there can be a mask, covering any sign of weakness. That mask comes in many forms but there is not one which sticks out like creativity. Poets, artists, musicians and writers everywhere have been found to suffer from various mental illnesses. Even world known stars struggle with something so intense. Amy Winehouse was a woman on a mountain of success, from a beautiful voice to numerous Grammy Award’s, but somehow it could all hide her underlying downfall. The life of Amy Winehouse was spent battling manic depression and addiction, but somewhere in all the darkness, she found a light in her world through music.
