IN THE BEGINNING
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, better known as Francisco Goya, was born in 1746 in Fuendetodos, Spain. This was during the age of Romanticism, the art period that glorified emotion, imagination, and nature. He moved to Saragossa with his family, where he began to study art at the age of 14. Goya studied under local artist José Luzán Martínez, his teacher. He learned to paint by copying the styles of other artists, such as Diego Velázquez and Rembrandt. Afterwards, Goya moved to Madrid. There, he worked with fellow painters Francisco and Ramón Bayeu y Subías, who were brothers. He married the brothers’ sister in 1773, Josefa Bayeu. Before his marriage, he had travelled to Italy, where he entered drawing competitions (around 1770-1771). Although he failed to win these competitions, the judges still liked his art.

Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala was an ethnic Andean, deeply inspired by the injustice of the colonial regime, he wrote a massive manuscript in 1615 about the history of the Inca Empire to the King of Spain. His masterpiece includes 1,200 pages, of which 398 were images full of details, that are clearly considered by the artist to be the most direct and effective way of communicating his ideas to the audience. Felipe de Ayala focused on the conflicts between the settlers and the natives to reveal, in his powerful drawings, his wider purpose of a desire for a colonial reformation that will bring stability and justice to the Andean people. Two major reasons that motivated Ayala to write the manuscript are broadly seen in his drawings: the first is the mistreatment towards him and the second is a more direct discrimination of the native Andeans.
Sofonisba Anguissola was born in 1532 in Cremona, Italy as the eldest of seven artistic children. She was the daughter of minor noblemen Amilcare Anguissola and during the time of her birth, women were only trained in needlework, religion, courtesy and refined living, but Sofonisba was taught painting and how to play piano as well. She was the first female painter famously known and was hired by King Philip II of Spain for fourteen years, which allowed her to get adequate resources needed for her paintings. The astonishingly brilliant artist Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes has always been revered and adored for his incredible paintings of the Spanish Royal family, but not many know that he was also a masterful engraver. In the exhibit titled Renaissance to Goya: Prints and Drawings from Spain, many of the pieces displayed were based on social commentary of the period within the country. This disdain is particularly palpable in the etching by Goya titled The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters. The psychological and emotional state of Goya at the time is masterfully rendered and the presentation of the exhibit is absolutely remarkable due to its brilliant color scheme and expert presentation of the works.
In Michel Gobat’s The Invention of the Latin America: A Transnational History of Anti-Imperialism, Democracy, and Race, he discusses the social construction of the term Latin America in the 19th century. The term Latin America was used to push against United States expansionism and European imperialism. The emergence of ‘Latin America’ is tied to a race, a democratic-republican government and linked to the idea of modernity, and the pushback against the United States. To be Latin America is to be modern, speak a romantic language, have Iberian ties and to embrace Roman Catholicism. By calling this specific geographical part of the world Latin is to imply the French imperialism within it. “Latin” is linked to this idea of “whiteness”, this means modernity that will allow Latin Americans to compete with the Anglo Saxon race. an argument for coining this term is because the people of current Latin America did not want to call the land America because of it’s association with the United States. They also did not want to call it just Latin because that implies that it is only associated with the French, instead they combined both to incorporate the two different words into one meaning. The Latin American identity also rose with the democratic, republican, and anti-colonial political culture that was shared in both North and South America.
Being part of a revolution is quite rare since the fact of it being a change in era isn’t really obvious until the change is actually accepted by most. Still, being part of such a cause, even unknowingly, means much to the entire world, whether it be at the time or later on. Digging deeper into a specific man who was part of such a transformation was Juan de Pareja, an African man of his own ways. Why take his example and what did he contribute? Well, Pareja was a very cogent counterexample for many stereotypes. He was his own person, living his life his own way, even if it meant concocting African and European cultures. Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain, to an artist and museum curator, Jose Ruiz Blasco. As a young child he surprised his elders with his astounding artistic abilities; and, as Rachel Barnes points out in her introduction to Picasso by Picasso: Artists by Themselves, there seemed to be no doubt that Picasso would become a painter.
Tapestries began to be made for more causal events. They then evolved into representing every day happenings. Tapestry became the art of that time period and told eventually we're studied and used by historians today. Original tapestries and their replicas for a smaller cost are sold today for people's interest. In todays time, we have more convenient machines that weave tapestries faster than the medieval times. Not as many tapestries are made and sold today compared to the medieval period (Touch of Tapestry).

His father taught figure drawing and oil painting to him at that point. Pablo started his first oil paintings as portraits of his family eventually doing caricatures of villagers. Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the rectory of Zundert in Barbant (Burra). His father was a soft-spoken Dutch clergyman. The only thing Van Gogh got from his father, was the desire to be involved in the family church. Even at an early age, Vincent showed artistic talent but neither he nor his parents imagined that painting would take him where it did later in life. One of his first jobs came at the age of sixteen, as an art dealer’s assistant. He went to work for Goupil and Company, an art gallery where an uncle had been working for some time. Three of his father’s brothers were art dealers, and he was christened after the most distinguished of his uncles, who was manager of the Hague branch of the famous Goupil Galleries (Meier-Graefe). On May 11th, 1904 a young artist by the name of Salvador Dali was born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. An artist who would grow and who works would impact the world. Dali has several museums around the world with his artworks displayed. During my visit to the Dali Museum located in Saint Petersburg, Florida it was an intriguing and informative trip into the artwork of Salvador Dali.
