Why is the legalization of marijuana a big discussion topic today? What do you think should be done about the use of marijuana? THC is the most well-known compound of this plant because this product is what gets you “high”, but there are a total of 483 compounds all together that are known of in the cannabis plant. Of course, everything has good and bad in it, but sometimes it is worth it to take the little bit of bad in it to get the better. Public support for legalization is about 54%, so that means about half of the Americans in the United States agree with legalizing marijuana use and half of them disagree and think marijuana should stay illegal in all states. Exactly why is marijuana such a big topic today? Marijuana is such a big controversial topic today because of its history and the pros and cons of legalizing it.
Firstly, cannabis or more popularly known as “marijuana” has been around the world since the beginning of time. In cultures such as China around 4000 BC marijuana was viewed as a gift. No historian knows exactly when the first time marijuana was used but they have estimated the plant’s uses had become more world-wide known and started to spread out nationally sometime in the 15th century. Henry VIII was king of England from 1509 until his death arose. He eventually also became king of Ireland shortly after he was claimed lord of Ireland. Marijuana was a very important crop many years ago in England. During Henry VIII’s time, he required every quarter acre of land to be planted with marijuana crops for every sixty acres. Overall, it is hard to say whether or not marijuana will be legalized in all states any time soon in the near future. Many cures could be found for cancers and diseases from being able to distribute legalized marijuana. Also many more health issues could arise from legalizing marijuana. It is hard to show marijuana is whether or not marijuana is harmful or not because detailed studies have not been performed on long-term smokers, even though it’s been used all throughout history on just about every continent. Nobody may ever know the real effects and advantages of marijuana until years and years later in the future. Which is why marijuana is a big controversial topic because of its history and the pros and cons of legalizing it.
