The Legalization of Marijuana
Marijuana has been in use for hundreds of years in India and Nepal, where it was used in many religious rituals. In the 1900’s, medical practitioners sold the drug under the name of cannabis, and consequently popularized the word among English speakers. Starting at 1860 and on, state governments began implementing regulations for sales of Marijuana. In 1894, there was a report released, at the request of the UK Secretary of State and the government of India, by the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission. This report was instrumental in the decriminalization of marijuana in said countries. But is marijuana really as bad as the reputation it has gained throughout the years? They posted an article, “Is Weed Good for You? 20 Health Benefits of Consuming Marijuana”, which explained important information on how marijuana can be medically beneficial in many different areas. According to the article, A variety of studies have shown that the usage of marijuana can reduce symptoms in patients diagnosed with depression, cancer, bipolar disorder, diabetes, obesity, epilepsy and Tourette’s, AIDS, migraines, and arthritis. In addition, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that “the Atlantic recently reported a study which found that people who smoke pot are skinnier. The researchers at the University of Nebraska, The Harvard School of Public Health, and Beth Israel deaconess Medical Center analyzed data to find that current pot smokers had a smaller waist circumference than those who had never used marijuana.
