The lecture given by Jo Thakker, focused on the definition, symptoms, DSM-5 criteria and epidemiology and etiology of Trauma and Stress-Related Disorders. When defining these disorders, it was important for Jo to distinguish between stress and stressors. Sue, Sue, Sue and Sue (2016) define stress as a psychological or physiological response stressor that is internal (p.165). Stressors are defined as the external events that place a demand on us that is psychological or physiological (p.165). These distinctions were important to make known in the lecture, as they play a role in distinguishing between the types of stress and trauma disorders. These differences included a higher perception of loss of control and threat, greater exposure at a younger age and to higher impact events, more overall anxiety, along with biological differences that made females more susceptible to the development of these disorders (p196). Concerning these factors, this would likely predict their future directions and outlook as the attempt to move forwards from these past events. The lecture discussed psychotherapy methods for treatment along with relaxation techniques and other training, however the research has suggested that partaking in rumination of one’s own accord in partner or other relationships can help the victim come to terms with their situation without professional help. Posttraumatic growth, a term discussed in the research of post-traumatic stress disorder involves the ability of individual sufferers to develop outlooks and changes that will positively affect their situation after a traumatic event (Jin, Xu, & Liu, 2014). Interestingly enough, although women tend to be more affected by traumatic events, they are also more likely to create posttraumatic growth for themselves, which helps them fare better off in the long run. While women are more prevalent to developing these disorders, they are also more likely to experience more growth according to the research. This is of course subject to limitations, and cannot be generalized to all women, but is important to note these differences susceptibility and
