Sindbad travelled peacefully for a couple of weeks, but one day, while they ship crew and Sindbad were sailing in China Sea. A violet wind struck the ship, drenching them with torrents of rain. As Sindbad and the crew prayed to Allah to protect them from the storm and what is going to happen. The crew his covered their equipment to save it from getting ruined. As the captain stared at Sindbad and the crew with expression of blank despair, beat his face and plucked the hairs of his beard. "Pray to Allah," the captain cried, "that He may save us from the peril into which we have fallen!" As the captain opened one of his cabin chests and took from it a small cotton bag filled with ashlike powder. He sprinkled some of the powder over the water. The captain said they are approaching Realm of kings. Suddenly the ship was tossed high up and then disappeared. With Allah's help Sindbad clung to a piece of wood which had fallen from lost vessels. As mighty waves took have for nights and days till he reached island that has fruits, which he took as supplies and continued his journey. He has found a tree which he cut a used it as ship. Sindbad suddenly been caught by net. Old man took Sindbad. The old men took care of Sindbad till he got his health back. The old man took Sindbad to the baths of the city, where he was washed with perfumed water. Then the old man took Sindbad to his house. The host left Sindbad in noble chamber, with number of slaves to help him. The kind old man entertained Sindbad in this fashion for three days. When Sindbad recovered completely the old man visited him in the chamber and started conservation. Just before leaving the room, he turned and said: "if you wish to sell your merchandise, my friend, I will gladly come down with you to the market-place." Sindbad sold his merchandise which was a piece of wood that he came with it. The item was sold in a bid for eleven hundred dinars. One day while Sindbad and old man were talking, the old man said: "My son, pray grant me a favour." "With all my heart," Sindbad replied. The old man wants Sindbad to marry his daughter who will be by herself and all his belongs will go to her.
The extend of most American’s knowledge of early America is of Columbus’ discovery of America for Europe in 1492 and the landing of the Mayflower in Plymouth in 1620. This was true of A Voyage Long and Strange author, Tony Horwitz. Horwitz felt as if there were pieces missing in his picture of early America and set out on a journey that spanned from Canada to the Dominican Republic. The novel starts out with a prologue of Horwitz talking about his own reasons for wanting to learn more of early America and then is broken into three sections Discovery, Conquest, and Settlement. Each section discusses another period in early American history starting with first contact in Vinland and ending with the landing in Plymouth.
In “The Boat” by Alistair MacLeod, the mother shows the importance of tradition to her, which has been cemented in her since youth. Throughout the piece, the reader realizes that the mother comes from a large traditional family of fisherman, which in effect the mother’s most defining characteristic was that she “was of the sea, as were all her people, and her horizons were the very literal ones she scanned with her dark and fearless eyes”. Tradition and her inherited family values shaped her personality that was shown throughout the piece, such as her diligence during her husband’s fishing excursions to her stubbornness throughout the family’s hardships. In a sense, a large part of her identity came directly from her traditions, which she felt

All that tenements in New York were hard to live in it. Then, the writer gave facts about the people’s life in the tenements. The writer said he never said that New York had tenements less slum than those in old cities. After that, he said that the dangerous class, which is poor class, is less dangerous than the other classes. He blames the wealthy people because of the poverty of the other people. He said that he talked about tenement problems in a meeting. He talked to protestant denominations, and they discussed it. He said that a few of business men was listening to the cry of a Christian, who said that those people can’t understand the love of God because they are only a greedy men. They tried to give a solution that instead of the thinking of the man with the knife. There was a ship-owner that was about to send out an emigrant-ship to sea. He knew that the ship was old and often needed to be repaired. He had doubts that the ship could make the voyage safely, and that he should look into the integrity of the ship. By the time it was to embark on its journey, the man had convinced himself that the ship would not have any troubles because it had safely gone through voyages before. The boat ended up sinking on that voyage and the man collected his insurance money and told no tales.
It was a warm rainy June night the humidity was high which made it even harder to breathe on the crammed boat. My family was asleep on the constantly rocking boat suddenly the boat shook, but my family was still fast asleep. After about another hour or so it seems we start closing in and my father feels sand brush his feet. We both let out a huge sigh of relief as my father finally touches the bottom. still being about a quarter mile from the shore we do sort of a “Island hop” with the sand patches and we make our way back from where we came. Once we get back we decide thats enough beach for the day and go home. Feeling victorious and defeated at the same time I still hold a scar within me. and within that scar there is a small dark hole within me that is afraid of the ocean. And to this day I fear I will forever be afraid.
Most history books has recorded that between the years 1701-1760, millions of Africans were literally stolen away from their native lands leaving behind their families, work, heritage, and everything that was familiar to them. Robbed of their independence and ‘humanness’; they were reduced to cargo. This was what ‘the Middle Passage’ also known, as the ‘Slave Triangle’ was all about; the trading of goods and commodities among continents including the trading of black men, women and children who were treated like property.
The Middle Passage (or Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade) was a voyage that took slaves from Africa to the Americas via tightly packed ships. The trade started around the early 1500s, and by 1654 about 8,000-10,000 slaves were being imported from Africa to the Americas every year. This number continued to grow, and by 1750 that figure had climbed to about 60,000-70,000 slaves a year. Because of the lack of necessary documents, it is hard to tell the exact number of Africans taken from their homeland. But based on available clues and data, an estimated 9-15 million were taken on the Middle Passage, and of that about 3-5 million died. While the whole idea seems sick and wrong, many intelligent people and ideas went in to making the slave trade economically successful.
They are forced to contend with the realization that their survival does not matter to nature. The correspondent comes to the realization, “When it occurs to a man that nature does not regard him as important, and that she feels she would not maim the universe by disposing of him, he first wishes to throw bricks at the temple, and he hates deeply the fact that there are no bricks and no temples” (Crane 213). While the men may try to pin their trouble on the “mythicized deity,” that really does not serve them. It is important to consider the meaning of home when analyzing The Seafarer. The narrator of this poem seems to feel a sense of belonging while traveling the sea despite the fact that he is obviously disillusioned with its hardships .The main character undergoes a transformation in what he considers home and this dramatically affects his life and lifestyle. Towards the end of The Seafarer the poet forces us to consider our mortality, and seems to push the notion that life is just a journey and that we will not truly be at home until we are with God.
We are taken through a journey as we learn of an Old man who sits at a cafe alone at night. The Old man is deaf, and had recently tried to commit suicide although he is a pleasant customer; the two waiters must watch him to ensure that he doesn't get too drunk, because he will leave without paying. As the two waiters in the cafe play close attention to the Old man the Younger waiter is clearly upset because the Old man will most likely be staying all night, and he is anxious to go home and see his wife. The Younger waiter wonders why it is that the Old man tried to kill himself and says to the deaf Old man that he should have killed himself last week, but the Old man simply asks for more brandy. After going back to the table where the two waiters had been sitting together, he asks the Older waiter why the Old man tried to kill himself. However, the Older waiter was not certain and replied by stating that it was because of despair and that he tried to hang himself and was found and cut down by his niece.
