In Anton Chekhov 's “The Lady with the Toy Dog,”Anna and Dimitri have married young and are searching for something; they do not know what but believe they have found it in Yalta with each other. Dimitri is a veteran adulterer and though not religious, he considers “every affair of that kind, at first a divine diversion” (137). It seems that the concept of “fate” diverts their attention from the monotony and responsibility of everyday life. Anna admits, “something strange was going on in me,” but realistically, they are looking for relief in another person who is also seeking something higher than oneself (140). Together, they find themselves in one another. The affair becomes a symbol of the tangible existence of fate for both of them. We could theorize that by denying their own “fate,” they deny their responsibility for creating their own circumstances. What influences their meeting, separation, and reunion validates their attraction for one another and
Consciously, Anna might believe she is a victim of circumstance, however, subconsciously she is aware that she is the creator of her own circumstance. When she cries out “God forgive me,” she symbolizes a need for self-forgiveness and the forgiveness of her husband (139). Instead of being honest with her husband and herself, she fails to take responsibility and never admits to the affair. Without taking responsibility of her actions, she returns to an unsatisfying marriage and continues to use faith to guide her destiny. When she leaves Dimitri after the affair, she claims, “it is a good thing I am going away...It is fate”(141). Failing to recognize the revelation of her own faults confines her to return to an unhappy marriage, meanwhile her belief in predetermined fate distorts her level of responsibility and robs her of growing from the
