What is Time Management, and why is it so important? Time management is the ability to plan and control how you spend the hours in your day effectively to accomplish your goals. Time management is important, because it is one of the most vital soft skills that you need to have. Without time management, it is easy for you to let yourself over to coincidence, and eventually you will not steer your life in the direction that you need to. People will begin to run over you. I would like to explain the subject of time management and students. There are a few important points that I would like to cover to explain why it is so hard for students to use time management in their lives and daily routines.

The reasoning behind academic procrastination is fairly complex. In the article “Academic Procrastination: Frequency and Cognitive - Behavioral Correlates” researchers further explore behavioral measures. Unlike any other study at the time, they related the self-report of procrastination to behavioral measures (Soloman & Rothblum, 1984). The purpose of the study was to a.) determine how often academic procrastination was present in college students, and the extent to which students found the procrastination a problem and their willingness to alter it; b.) to determine reasons for procrastination in a methodical way in order to further recognize the mental actions that contribute to it and finally c.) to point out similarities and differences between the self-report and behavioral scales of procrastination and the standardize self-report measures of procrastination for topics that are likely relatable. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.

In “Coping with Procrastination,” Rebecca Moore and Arnold Packer discuss the various reason about why students procrastinate along with certain methods to avoid them. In dealing with procrastination, I have learned certain methods that, not only have worked and I continue to use, but some that only took my attention away from my work and limited what I got out of my assignments. Being involved in school and having assignments that were up to me to finish I learned many methods and strategies that limited my tendency to procrastinate. An example that Moore and Packer provided was having a fear of not performing your assignment or task well therefore, stopping you from completing the work and always putting it off.
Procrastination is when people put other tasks, like clubbing with friends, ahead of completing the project assigned. There are seven categories of procrastination listed by Hoffman and Julie within Stop Procrastinating Now! 10 simple & Successful Steps for Student Success which students may fall within. The first is the “perfectionist procrastinator” where students usually get the project done ahead of time but because of wanting the project to be perfect they turn it in late. The second type is the “relax, it can wait procrastinator” which are students who think they have enough time so they focus on other activates. The problem is that students misjudge how long to wait and end up handing their projects in late. The third is the “fantasizer procrastinator” which are students who think about how their project fits into the big picture. These students turn their project in late because of “ambitious (although unrealistic) dreams pertaining to his goals and thus seldom is able to begin the project” (Hoffman and Julie, 19). The definition of procrastination according to Solomon & Rothblum is the determined delay of the start or completion of a task (1984). Procrastinators will also differ from those who do not procrastinate in numerous ways. An example would be that procrastinators often fear failure, strive for perfection, may be slightly pessimistic and more anxious, which may become worse when they realize they are procrastinating (McCown & Johnson, 1991) or when deadlines are approaching (Tice & Baumeister, 1997). The personal and realistic problems that result from dysfunctional procrastination are predominantly acute in academics, as the inclination to put off school-related tasks often result in challenging levels of stress (Solomon & Rothblum 1984), on the whole the end of the academic semester would be the peak (Tice & Baumeister, 1997).
Procrastination can be a major problem in both your career and your personal life because procrastination is the thief of time. When you keep putting off things, they keep piling up and getting in your way of achieving other things. Then you have missed opportunities, frenzied work hours, feel stressed, guilt and resentment; you find you are being overwhelmed easily because there is just so much to do.
Procrastination is a tendency to postpone, put off, delay, reschedule, take a rain check on, put on ice, hold off, or to defer what is necessary to reach a particular goal.(Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus, Third Edition. Philip Lief Group 2009.) While attending College some students find it hard to juggle work, family, and friends. Leading most students down a dangerous path to procrastination; that negative impact affect students from their physical health, mental health, and social health.
It is therefore, vital for the students to realize the actual root causes of poor time management and arrest the same in good time. Some of the stated causes include: lack of prioritizing tasks, lack of setting personal goals, failing to manage distractions, procrastination, multitasking and last but not least in effective scheduling of tasks.
What do we know about time management? As adults we should know a lot about time management. We all strive to become the best that we can be. This alone should encourage us to learn about time management. Every aspect of our lives depends on it. If we try to plan, organize, and execute our ideas most of the time we can manage it well, but when we go the other route, and jump out there feet first, most of the time we do not do as well. This is not the case in every light, but usually it is the norm. Even as we sit in class trying to better ourselves by improving on our education, we learn that we must manage time to the best of our abilities. This is not done only for school, but for our families for those of us that have children and spouses. A lot of the time, we manage to get everything done and leave ourselves out in the cold when it comes to making time for ourselves. If it is not our job or school we are trying to meet someone else's needs.
Most humans have habits, habits in which they do simply because if they do not do them they feel uncomfortable. Procrastination is one of those habits that not all, but most people suffer from. Procrastination means to put off key things to do less important things that could possibly wait. It has been proving that all most everyone procrastinates, but procrastination does not determine what type of person one is. Procrastination is like a virus or a bad cold that does not want to go away. If one does not stop the problem it will get bigger; therefore, if people do not control their procrastinating they will start to do it more. However, the worst time to procrastinate is in college. College students often forget hoe important time is. Being a procrastinator can lead to several different outcomes. Procrastination can led to either good or bad outcomes. It all depends on the person doing the procrastinating. Procrastination is not always meant to happen; sometimes it simply happens because a person is too busy. Procrastination has both good and bad causes and effects, can cause failure, and bad decisions.

You accomplish more, you make better decisions, and you work more efficiently; this leads to a more successful life. It can be the key difference between getting projects done and ultimately failing.
Time management is not a new idea and many methods have been proposed regarding the best way to handle time management issues for business students. These suggestions can often be quite simple, such as writing down lists of things to do in order to support people in making good use of their time for work or recreational purposes. When time pressures are high, planning tasks and actions does not always lead to the completion of the work. It is in recognition of this that time management training programs have been designed, aiming to give an insight into the time required for activities, ways to make time plans, and increasing the efficiency of people by teaching them how to plan properly, how to prioritize tasks, and how to handle unexpected tasks. This is increasingly easy, particularly for students, as “books, articles, and time management training programs that were initially developed for managers have been made available to everyone”.(Claessens, Brigitte J.C. 2004).
