In the novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini displays the idea of individual’s actions being influenced by the norms in a community. Hosseini explains the contributing factors that help build up a person’s moral and values. Amir’s perspective of religion is formed by people in his community. But as he gets older he is able to interpret religion for himself in a positive manner. Assef is also influenced by the people in his community, he started off with a preconceived notion of how religion and ethnic views work. But as he gets older his personal perspective on these social practices get worse. He outlines the importance of religion and ethnicity in this novel and the different effects it has on people. Assef was able to interpret religion and the ethnicity of Afghanistan for himself, on the other hand, Amir was always influenced by those in his community, like his father. Hosseini portrays Assef as a very vocal conservative who despises Hazara’s. In the novel, when Assef meets with Amir and his childhood friend Hassan, Assef was quick to judge and call Hassan out for his ethnicity: “Afghanistan is the land of Pashtuns. It always has been, always will be. We are the true Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this Flat – Nose here” (40). Here Assef is deliberately attacking Hassan for his ethnic differences. In Afghan community the commonality for Hazara’s to be accepted was very rare. Assef’s hate towards the Hazara’s was largely influenced by the community as well as his patriotic nature. The Afghan community has influenced him to believe Pashtuns were the superior ethnic race and that Hazara’s were nothing but a waste of space. This quotation is significant to the theme of community because a community is an influential factor in the way you are brought up and in the way you interpret things.
