The Keystone XL Pipeline Negatively Impacts the Environment and the People in It

The Canadian Keystone XL Pipeline is harmful and should not be encouraged by anyone, especially the Canadian government. The Keystone XL is harmful to the environment that surrounds the Keystone XL pipeline. Also shouldn’t be encouraged because the Keystone XL may cause pollution. Lastly, the Keystone XL Pipeline shouldn’t be encouraged because the Keystone XL pipeline negatively affects the health of citizens. The Canadian Keystone XL pipeline shouldn’t be encouraged because it negatively impacts the surrounding environment, it causes pollution, and it negatively affects the health of citizens.

The Canadian Keystone XL pipeline should not be encouraged because the pipeline negatively impacts the surrounding environment. Firstly, the pipeline impacts the environment because the pipeline could leak oil into the environment. As of June 2012, the Keystone Pipeline, the pipeline made before the Keystone XL leaked at least 14 times since it was launched in June 2010 (Potter, pg.5). Due to the fact that the original pipeline leaked 14 times in two years, there is a low chance that the pipeline wouldn’t leak oil into the environment, since this harms the environment that the pipeline surrounds, the Keystone XL shouldn’t be encouraged. Secondly, the pipeline impacts the environment because it’s near major water supplies. The Keystone XL is close to the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer that “supplies drinking water to more than 12 million people living across 60 counties”, and the Ogallala Aquifer which is “the largest aquifer in the western North American region” (N/A, pg.1). ...er. The Keystone XL has pollutants that will go into the air and it will increase the chance of getting cancer (Barron-Lopez pg.1). Due to the fact that the Keystone XL increases the risk of cancer; an already disease almost impossible to cure, the Keystone XL pipeline should not be encouraged. Secondly, the Keystone XL will negatively affect the health of citizens because the pipeline goes through main waterways. The Keystone XL goes through waterways and if the waterways get contaminated, then the health of citizens that rely on the waterways will get negatively affected by consuming the contaminated water (Bruno pg.7). Due to the fact that by building the Keystone XL, citizens that rely on water close to the pipeline may have their health worsen, the Keystone XL should not be encouraged. Lastly, the Keystone XL will negatively affect the health of citizens
