The Canadian Keystone XL Pipeline is harmful and should not be encouraged by anyone, especially the Canadian government. The Keystone XL is harmful to the environment that surrounds the Keystone XL pipeline. Also shouldn’t be encouraged because the Keystone XL may cause pollution. Lastly, the Keystone XL Pipeline shouldn’t be encouraged because the Keystone XL pipeline negatively affects the health of citizens. The Canadian Keystone XL pipeline shouldn’t be encouraged because it negatively impacts the surrounding environment, it causes pollution, and it negatively affects the health of citizens.
The Canadian Keystone XL pipeline should not be encouraged because the pipeline negatively impacts the surrounding environment. Firstly, the pipeline impacts the environment because the pipeline could leak oil into the environment. As of June 2012, the Keystone Pipeline, the pipeline made before the Keystone XL leaked at least 14 times since it was launched in June 2010 (Potter, pg.5). Due to the fact that the original pipeline leaked 14 times in two years, there is a low chance that the pipeline wouldn’t leak oil into the environment, since this harms the environment that the pipeline surrounds, the Keystone XL shouldn’t be encouraged. Secondly, the pipeline impacts the environment because it’s near major water supplies. The Keystone XL is close to the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer that “supplies drinking water to more than 12 million people living across 60 counties”, and the Ogallala Aquifer which is “the largest aquifer in the western North American region” (N/A, pg.1). Due to the fact that the Keystone XL increases the risk of cancer; an already disease almost impossible to cure, the Keystone XL pipeline should not be encouraged. Secondly, the Keystone XL will negatively affect the health of citizens because the pipeline goes through main waterways. The Keystone XL goes through waterways and if the waterways get contaminated, then the health of citizens that rely on the waterways will get negatively affected by consuming the contaminated water (Bruno pg.7). Due to the fact that by building the Keystone XL, citizens that rely on water close to the pipeline may have their health worsen, the Keystone XL should not be encouraged. The Dakota Access Pipeline and the Keystone XL Pipeline are two pipeline projects that were suspended in the past. These pipelines were stopped because they could have a big impact of people and the environment. The making of these pipelines would cause a great amount of carbon pollution. Recently, President Trump signed the orders to approve the pipeline project. The projects have pros and cons, the people in favor of the pipelines think we would be able to rely less on foreign oil. The people against the pipeline believe that the pipelines would cause the release of gases into the air that could be harmful for other people.

Kinder Morgan has proposed the idea of building a twin pipeline for that of the Trans Mountain pipe line. And the clear question for all Canadians especially in the lower main land of British Columbia is this proposition to twin the pipe line safe, economical for British Columbia, and reliable way to transport fossil fuel in the form of crude oil? Or is this just business as usual? We defiantly need to establish the safety behind this. But safety is not only for the people around the pipeline but for the impact the building of said pipe line will have on the environment around it.
From the arguments, it is evident that the negative effects of the construction of Keystone XL Pipeline supersede its positive impacts, both on the United States of America’s economy and environment. Therefore, it is important that the country takes into consideration the negative effects that might be associated with the pipeline before embarking on its construction.
West Virginia and Kentucky have been faced with a rise in health-related issues, leading the nation in cancer-related deaths. Many of those cases have been said to be caused from greater exposer to pollution from coal-mining activity, which is said to increase your chances for cancer along with other fatal diseases. The Appalachia area has seen a rise in mortality rates, over 60,000 cases of those being cancer-related deaths directly linked to mountaintop removal practices. The Keystone Pipeline started construction in 2008 for the main purpose of connecting Canadian and American oil refineries to transport crude oil from the oil sands of Canada faster and more efficient. So far the first three phases of the pipeline have been completed but the proposed and most controversial is Phase IV. It connects Hardisty, Alberta to Steele City, Oklahoma which requires a presidential permit and it also connects the 485-mile southern leg known as the Gulf Coast Project between Steele City and Port Arthur, Texas, which is now operating (Eilperin). The benefits of the pipeline include an increase in jobs, contribute $3.4 billion to the U.S economy and also save time and money from transporting the oil by pipeline instead of tanks and rails. At the same time it would be a great harm to the environment, making the climate unstable, and could cause possible future oil spills. The articles covering the Keystone Pipeline generally list out the same points, covering the same benefits and consequences of building the pipeline. Sources like Fox News and CNS have more of an opposition towards the pipeline and narrow in on the risks and of the effects it would have on the people. Whereas news stations such as CNN and The Washington Post address both sides of the controversy but are subtle about being in favor of the pipeline. The international sources such as Al Jazeera and Reuters oppose the pipeline and are more open with supporting the environmentalists.
