2. Public management could not function without capable leaders. What qualities and skills are the most important for successful public managers to possess? Identify the key characteristics of successful public managers, provide examples of these characteristics at work in the public sector, and show the impact of these characteristics on public organizations.

He would rather walk away from a career he loved, then allow misuse of lands he swore to protect. His open display of protest, turned on everything he learned in 32 years working for the Forest Service. However, his act of disobediance ensured he would not turn away from his core values. The impact of Fergusons authenticity could be felt outside the Forest Service, as supporters of his efforts continued to heap awards and accolades on him. One such award was presented to him by the Sassafras Chapter of the National Audubon Society commending his “extraordinary efforts in the preservation of our natural resources” (O’Leary, 2009.
