Renalda PetitBois Period 6 Ms. Savage February, 10 2014 Final draft of research paper If it weren't for the 1920's, the United States today would be quite different. The Jazz Age helped influence the clothing and music we love today. Flappers, believe it or not played a major role in the evolution of women’s fashion. Although alcohol was illegal, gangsters and bootleggers found illegal ways to supply it to people. The use of credit is still used today but the whole concept of it has become more organized and efficient over time. Also, many other political, social and economic changes were made during this time period The “Roaring twenties” began after World War 1, and the younger generation began to revolt against their elders. Flappers were the newer generation of women who were on the wild side and wore short dresses and went to extravagant parties (History 1). The jazz age was the growth of the young generation. It lead to new dances in rebellion to the older generation who detested jazz (History 1). The Charleston for example, is a dance that requires rapid footwork. In 1922, the movie The Jazz singer was released, it was the first movie with sound. Four years later, Technicolor was invented and movies became more enjoyable. Gangsters and Bootleggers found many ways to drink illegally during the prohibition. Many people went to speakeasies to buy alcohol. A group of gangsters decided to deal alcohol because of high demand. The most prominent gangster was Al Capone (History 2). The 18th amendment to the United States constitution prohibited the manufacture, sale transport, import, or export pf alcoholic beverages. The depression lasted ten years. The fact that the United States bounced back up so quickly is remarkable and that’s why this time period is considered relevant in history. The 1920’s were a very significant time period. This was a time of change and transformation. As a result of these changes, there were many advancements and reformation for political, social and economic issues. Each innovation played an important role in developing the United States that we live in today. The 1920’s were a very significant time period. This was a time of change and transformation. It was a dawn of new politics in America when congress finally passed the women’s suffrage bill and the 19th Amendment became law, giving women the right to vote. The United States had one of the greatest periods of prosperity ever during his presidency from 1923 to 1929. Great technological advances were also made in the 1920’s. Our nation witnessed the first flights around the world. Inventions such as cars and radios improved the standard of living for the common man. These inventions as well as the conservative economic pollicies added to a huge economic boom. “The economy experienced growth of seven to ten percent in six years of the twenties” (Vanguard, facts on funds). Later, many of the economic procedures in the decade would lead to danger especially in the stock market. “The nations total income rose from 74.3 billion in 1923 to 89 billion in 1929.”(Vanguard facts)
