Traditional Chinese culture has a very strict set of rules which need to be followed. Only if one follows the rules, will they fit into the Chinese society. This is depicted in the book The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy and Iron Road directed by David Wu. The Jade Peony portrays a story about three Chinese-Canadian siblings living in Vancouver’s Chinatown: Jook-Liang, Jung-Sum, and Sek-Lung. Each child experiences different complications depending on their age and gender. Their Grandmother, Poh Poh, teaches them to balance their Chinese culture along with Canadian culture. However, the characters in the novel and movie prove they are not inferior to others in their community. As a result of these obstacles, the characters in The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy and Iron Road directed by David Wu are able to mature. Sek-Lung, from The Jade Peony, and Little Tiger, from Iron Road, struggle with their identity. This is shown when Sek-Lung’s teacher, Mrs. Lim, asks him if he is Canadian or Chinese which makes Sek-Lung reflect on her question and tells the reader “The words RESIDENT ALIEN were stamped on my birth certificate, as if I were a loitering stranger.” (Choy 136) Growing up with more than one culture to balance becomes very difficult. Sek-Lung is born in Canada yet he is grown up in a Chinese-cultured family. Even if he wants to call Canada his home, his birth certificate is stamped with the words “Resident Alien” because of his Chinese background. The words stand out to him so much because they make him feel like he does not belong in his birthplace, Canada. He has always felt confused as to what he really is; Canadian or Chinese. Liang’s courage is praised by her best friend, Old Wong, when he says “Liang is tiger-willed” (Choy 28) The reason Old Wong chose to use the word tiger-willed is because tigers are known to be brave and leaders. Old Wong is implying that Liang is a very similar to tigers as she is also brave and shows leadership. In the family, Liang is known as “mo yung”, which is the Chinese word for useless, because she is a girl and nothing but trouble is expected from of her. This is shown when Old Wong visits the family for the first time and due to his facial deformity, everyone keeps their distance from him, out of fear, except for Liang. Liang runs to him and does something no one else would have the courage to do, hug him. In Chinese culture, women are viewed as the feeble gender while men are seen to hold leadership skills. Despite being the youngest and the only daughter in the family, Liang showed leadership rather than her father or her older brothers. In Iron Road, James tells her, he respects her for her courage because she was able to go into the tunnel alone and blow it up despite putting herself in danger. Using the knowledge Tiger gained from working in a fireworks factory, she was able to save her fellow workers in Canada from days of labour by blowing up the tunnel (Iron Road). Liang's main interests consist of movies, stories, tap-dancing, and imitating Shirley Temple. Wong-Suk buys her expensive, beautiful ribbon one day for her second hand tap shoes and Poh-Poh helps her tie them into fancy flowers. -- This is where we learn a bunch about Poh-Poh's childhood. She was born in China and so it was already too bad that she had be born a girl child. But further more she was sort of disfigured. Her forehead was sloppy and mis-shapen and immediately everyone told her mother she was the ugliest baby ever. Her mother sold her to a wealthy family; where she was a servant. The concubine would beat her and their other servants with a rod-- as if they were oxen. Poh-Poh had to learn to do things quickly and flawlessly or she would be beaten. Her fingers would bleed because she was practicing tying these intricet(abc?) patterns. She of course grew out of her 'deformity' and was quite a pretty lady.

We have all been in a situation where we have immigrated to a new country for different reasons regarding, better future, or education. In the book Jade of Peony, Wayson Choy describes a struggle of a Chinese immigrant family as they settle in Canada, through the perspective of three young children; Liang, Jung, and Sekky. Each child describes his or her struggle, while settling in a new country. The family struggles to keep their children tied to their Chinese customs and traditions as they fit in this new country. The Chinese culture needs to be more open minded as it limits the future generation’s potential. Chinese culture limitations are seen through the relationship expectations, education, gender roles and jobs.
The story opens with a brief synopsis of Jing-Mei’s mother’s past. As a Chinese immigrant fleeing from war, her mother leaves behind everything: “her mother and father, her family home, her first husband, and two daughters, twin baby girls.” (Tan 206) As a resident in America, Jing-Mei’s mother does not wallow in misery but instead looks forward to a life with limitless boundaries, honestly believing that “[y]ou could become instantly famous.” (Tan 206) Brent tells us that Chinese immigrants view America as a true land of opportunity and that tradition demands a daughter’s obedience to her mother (1). With a history steeped in traditional Chinese culture and a spirit of adventure, her mother decides Jing-Mei will fulfill this dream and become a child prodigy.
...specific conflicts cause a rift between the mother-daughter relationships in this novel. The first of heritage separates the mother from the daughters through characteristics inherited by their cultures. The second conflict of history splits the relationship through differing life experiences and childhood conditions and opportunities. The third and final conflict is the expectations held by the mother's for their children. Both Lindo and Suyuan expect their children to be the model of their Chinese ancestors while living in the United States. However their rivalry pushes both mothers to thrust their daughters out of their trust, a mistake that costs them dearly. The daughters also fail to recognize their parents past and their current motivations. These three differences force the conflict seen in the novel between these two pairs and cause their lifelong separation.
Maxine, being of the first generation of her family to be born in America, only knows about China from what she hears in her mother’s “talk-stories.” These stories are told to act as lessons on how the Chinese people were and should be, and are often vary critical. In “No Name Woman,” the tale of Maxine’s aunt who was shunned from her family for having an affair shows how careful young women must be when growing up in Chinese culture. “My aunt haunts me—her ghost drawn to me because now, after fifty years of neglect, I alone devoted pages to her…” (17). Maxine feels remorse and can relate to her aunt because she too feels a sense of alienation from her traditional Chinese and seemingly narrow-minded heritage.
All through time, successive generations have rebelled against the values and traditions of their elders. In all countries, including China, new generations have sought to find a different path than that of their past leaders. Traditional values become outdated and are replaced with what the younger society deems as significant. Family concentrates on this very subject. In the novel, three brothers struggle against the outdated Confucian values of their elders. Alike in their dislike of the traditional Confucian system of their grandfather, yet very different in their interactions with him and others, begin to reach beyond the ancient values of Confucianism and strive for a breath of freedom. Their struggles against the old values lead to pain, suffering and eventually achievement for the three of them, however at a harsh price for two brothers.

They were taught by their mothers, how to act, who they were, and what being Chinese meant. The daughters in this story grew up in a more relaxed world, where being an individual was accepted and appreciated. No one was punished for being themselves in America. For the women in this novel, finding their true identity was one of the most important things. By using their cultural background and discovering who their mothers were, they were able to find their true selves in the end as well giving them a complete sense of identity.
In the stories told by Jing-Mei, Tan weaves in flashbacks and memories of Jing-Mei's own childhood experiences, including stories she has heard of her mother Suyuan's early life in China. These stories help to explain why she teaches her daughter the v alues of optimism and determination. As the reader encounters these flashbacks, Suyuan's tragic history is revealed. When the war reaches her town, Suyuan loses everything she owns, and in an attempt to save her own life by fleeing from China she is force d to leave her two twin babies behind on the side of the road in hopes they might have a chance at a good life. Jing-Mei recalls that her mother "had come here in 1949 after losing everything in China... but she never looked back with regret. There w ere so many ways for things to get better"(Tan 132). As Suyuan's past is revealed, the reader can not help but realize her determination, optimism, and strong will as she perseveres against the odds to establish a better life in America. Suyuan tries to pass on her virtues of determination, optimism, and perseverance to her American born daughter Jing-Mei. Gish Jen’s “Who’s Irish” tells the story of a sixty-eight-year-old Chinese immigrant and her struggle to accept other cultures different from her own. The protagonist has been living in the United States for a while but she is still critical of other cultures and ethnicities, such as her son-in-law’s Irish family and the American values in which her daughter insists on applying while raising the protagonist’s granddaughter. The main character finds it very hard to accept the American way of disciplining and decides to implement her own measures when babysitting her granddaughter Sophie. When the main character’s daughter finds out that she has been spanking Sophie she asks her mother to move out of the house and breaks any further contact between them by not taking Sophie to visit her grandmother in her new place. The central idea of the story is that being an outsider depends on one’s perspective and that perspective determines how one’s life will be.
