Americans today, know that there is a problem with illegal immigration. Everyday many illegal immigrants cross the borders. There are between twelve and twenty million illegal immigrants in America. (“Scary Immigration Statistics” 1) The U.S. should make all illegal immigrants register or deport them to their original countries. The U.S. should also make a program so that the immigrants can get a license for legality. If the immigrants do not want to cooperate, then they cannot be in America. The government spends billions of dollars a year on foreign aid. America is trillions of dollars in debt. Most of that money is from the U.S. trying to help out foreign countries. The economy is affected by illegal immigrants because they take a lot of American jobs. Those reasons are why illegal immigrants should have to file for citizenship.
When an immigrant does not file for citizenship then they are illegal. The act of entering the U.S. is called illegal immigration. Illegal immigration to the United States is the act of foreign nationals entering the United States, without government permission and in violation of United States nationality law, or staying beyond the termination date of a visa, also in violation of the law. (“Illegal Immigration” 1) When an immigrant is caught they are usually fined and can be detained up to six months for the first offense. The illegal immigrant waits in jail until their court hearing. Immigrants get a chance to prove that they have a legitimate reason to be in America. If the illegal immigrant cannot come up with a good reason to let them stay, they are deported. The United States was formed by the immigration of many people from all over the world. Americans take pride in knowing that we are a people of vast ethnic backgrounds and culture. However, at the present time, the flow of illegal immigration, as well as a large influx of other legal immigrants is placing a strain on our land of "huddled masses." Legal immigration to the United States can easily be handled and is welcomed by most Americans. However, the flow of illegal immigrants, especially from Mexico, must be stemmed, due to the strain it is placing on the government, (at the local, state and federal level), as well as the general population. Illegal immigrants are costing the United States over 24 billion dollars a year in taxpayers money (National Review 12.13.93). Something must be done to reduce the flow of illegal immigration into the United States. The focus of this paper will be the problems caused by and possible solutions to the problem of illegal immigration.

Among the problems that face our nation, illegal immigration seems to be one of the most regarded. “In 2005, there were 12.7 million people classified as refugees in the world. Refugees are forced to migrate because of danger in their own country.” (Cath Senker 12) Some push to end it while others want to have it legalized or less strict. There are many points that are argued on this topic. Although immigrants support the economy, they should have to pay taxes. Illegal immigration should be stopped or slowed until the legalization process and borders are improved. Due to the fact, that taxpayers are the backbone of our economy and nation as a whole.
Illegal immigration has been an ongoing problem in America for many decades. The form of law that currently governs the immigration process is, the Immigration and Naturalization Act, and it has been broken for many years as immigrants still continue to pour into the states illegally. The immigration acts enacted in the past that have been continuously modified leads up to the current policy that falls under the Incrementalism model. However, it is important to note that the current American Immigration system is broken and is in dire need of reform. There are 11 million people living in the dark and too many employers cheating the system by hiring undocumented workers in exchange for offering lesser pay. The current system is hurting the economy and bringing down our country as a whole.

The United States of America, being a country founded by immigrants, is known all over the world as the land of great opportunities. People from all walks of life travelled across the globe, taking a chance to find a better life for them and their family. Over the years, the population of immigrants has grown immensely, resulting in the currently controversial issue of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants are the people who have overstayed the time granted on their US, visa or those who have broken the federal law by crossing the border illegally. Matt O’Brien stated in his article “The government thinks that 10.8 million illegal immigrants lived in the country in January 2009, down from a peak of nearly 12 million in 2007.”(Para, 2).
Immigrating to the United States requires individuals to submit a number of detailed applications to the federal government (CIS). If and immigrant marries a legal citizen in America they become a citizen under law. The process of gaining citizenship continues to get more difficult (Discovery). To become a citizen you have to be able to prove your know most of Americas history and values. Among these are the constitution, star spangle banner, and other important U.S. documents. The United States has found that there are approximately 13 million illegal immigrants residing within its borders, and that number is predicted to rise with the years to come. Although there is no definite number, there is a great chance that more than half of these 13 million illegal immigrants drive illegally in the United States. This means that there are more than six million drivers on the roads who are not educated on American traffic laws, who are not registered on the government database, and who have no insurance to cover their accidents. On top of that, if pulled over, law enforcement has the ability to immediately deport these immigrants if they do not provide proper paperwork. It is a known fact that people from all over the world immigrate to the United States in search of the American dream.
Illegal immigration is a current hot topic in today’s society. One third of our inmates now serving time in federal prisons come from another country. Our nations criminal justice system is the target of serious budget cut backs. We can not afford to be paying for another nations citizens to be comfortably housed in Americas correctional facilities. America needs to do everything in it's power to ensure illegal immigration stops.
