A preamble – including the definitions of ‘refugee’ and ‘asylum seeker’ in relation to Australian immigration policy
Refugees and Asylum seekers are similar but not the same; a Refugee is “someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their own country because of a well founded fear of being persecuted because of their race, religion, opinion or membership of a certain social group”. Asylum seekers are people who have just claimed that they are a refugee; they must have their claims processed by the government of the country they are applying for asylum in. This report will compare and contrast 6 key areas in the issue of refugees and the causes behind refugees, the experiences of refugees travelling to Australia, the immigration policies
Many were picked up by the navy and taken to refugee camps in Asia. After Refugees arrived here, many were put into housing commissions; living in these conditions were not easy for many because there was a highly racist attitude towards people who were not white. People would throw their clothing out of the laundry and spitting on them, along with verbal abuse. Many refugees had to develop a thick skin to all this because many didn 't know how to find people in the same situation or even the basic services that were on offer, for example on woman from Vietnam, she fled because of the communist entry into power, she was pregnant when she entered Australia and when she was in labor because she was too scared to ask she took the bus to the hospital. People are still coming by boat, which is not a good thing but they are not being treated in the disgusting way that they were treated in the 70’s. Many of the asylum seekers that have come in the last few years have had the opportunity to go back to school and get the education that they have wanted for their entire lifetime but have not had the opportunity to go to school because they have been living in refugee camps their entire lives, so it has been beneficial for not only the refugees, but also Australia because by letting these people in there is more people that will be going for jobs, and more competition in university, school and the workplace which will allow for higher quality people in jobs and schools, which means that the refugees will be in the long run making a positive impact on the country as a
