My topic is gun control. This is a very broad topic. I will be focusing on carrying concealed weapons otherwise known as CCW. I chose this topic because I have a degree and background in law enforcement. Guns are very critical for law enforcement officers; it helps them protect themselves and others from daily threats and dangerous situations. I own a handgun myself and have my license to carry a concealed weapon. I go to the shooting range regularly for fun and to keep my skills up to date. I am proud of being a responsible gun owner who practices her second amendment right. Recent events have proven that the issues of carrying concealed weapons is still a hot topic. The second amendment of the United States Constitution protects …show more content…
Many people such as the public, senators and even the president often speak of gun control laws and issues. There has been talk about banning guns in the United States and becoming a county like England who forbid their citizens to own guns. There is also talk about making more regulations regarding buying and owning guns. Since Obama has become president the topic of gun control has appeared quite often. Most recently president Obama brought up gun control reform and is trying to prevent certain individuals who are banned from boarding airline flights from legally purchasing guns. Ultimately the government is trying to control the right to carry guns and is making it much harder to buy guns for the responsible and legal …show more content…
A peer-reviewed study done in 2013 in Applied Economic Letters found that “between the years of 1980-2009 states with more restrictive CCW laws had 10% higher gun related murder rates”(Concealed). There were also many cases where a citizen had a concealed handgun and prevented crimes from happening. This happened in a Salt Lake City store where a citizen with a gun stopped a knife- wielding man as he stabbed people in the store. Another case of this happened at the Appalachian School of law. Two men stopped a mass murder by retrieving guns from their cars. Citizens have also helped out police by taking out a shooter while police were pinned down in Early, Texas
The second amendment grants all Americans the right to bear arms. The ability to hold a firearm at any time as long as the firearm is registered. In the United states, all it takes to hold a firearm is a background check and a safety class. In a short reading from the “American Now” book a short article By Christina Tenuta called Responsible gun ownership saves lives she asks “do Americans really need guns?”, but are the guns really the problem? Although the second amendment requires some decent documents , the qualifications to obtain a firearm needs to be revised to a mental check, a family history check , and also to make it a priority for reinforcement to check on the registered firearm every six to twelve months.
Lott, John and Mustard, David . “Crime, Deterrence, and Right-to-Carry Concealed Handguns,”, Journal of Legal Studies v.26, no.1, pages 1-68, January 1997. Web. 20 April 2014
Thesis: We should have Gun-control in laws because it will prevent a lot of problems .
The second Amendment states, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right to bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This is one of the amendments that uplifted our amazing country. The right to bear arms is an American quality that is strong to build dour nation. Why try to take this away? Gun control policies are an arising problem that the united states face. Taking away guns is not going to prevent major mass shooting, guns are needed for personal safety, and sport shooting is a major industry and community that united states citizens do for a living.
Gun rights are the source of much controversy in today’s society. People have been skeptic after the multiple shootings that happened in the past few years. Recently, the NRA has been under constant threat by Congress. Background checks are not effective as planned. In order to keep the gun rights, changes need to be made in order to prevent gun control from being created.
Guns are always represented as a sigh of terror, violence and insecurity due to which, gun control is always being a significant and controversial issue from both political and self defense point of view. Guns and humans had a shared part of the past history, during that period guns were used for hunting and protection from the invaders. The second amendment of the U. S. constitution even made the guns/arms more debatable on the basis of keeping guns as their right. Their is a no harm keeping a gun for self protection under a proper law and order, which will be regulated by different background, physical check and the awareness of proper use of the guns. These checks will help lower down the statistical data of misuse of firearms and reduce
Within the past decade, gun control has become a major topic of discussion in the United States because of all the devastating mass shootings. They have come in multiple different settings, such as churches, schools, governmental buildings, and even movie theatres. Due to these shootings, many people’s response is that we need to crack down on gun control in order to take the weapons out of the killer’s hands, but the fact of the matter is that in some of the cases where many people are killed in shootings, the guy who killed them obtained the gun they used illegally. So us citizens need to realize that no matter what laws are passed or what efforts we make, the “bad” guys are going to get guns regardless, so we might as well allow our own
The US constitution clearly states and has stated for the last 225 years that, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” There was controversy over this amendment, up until 2008 if this meant that a United States citizen had the right to own firearms for protection or only for those of a militia to be armed and maintain, it was decided then that the second amendment protected an individual 's’ rights to own firearms unconnected to any militia. With that being said for 225 years, Americans have bought, sold, and shot firearms. Americans shoot guns for a recreational sport every single day. Every day 91 Americans are killed
Growing up in Brooklyn, NY I keenly became aware that in my own neighborhood there were educational disparities, street violence, and police brutality. Due to the widespread presence of these issues while walking home from school or going grocery shopping with my mother, I also learned there was internal conflict between the people that lived in the community and those who were appointed to represent them- the congressional representative of my district. My premature awareness of these issues caused me to question who had the ability to solve the problems of my community? I discovered that the television show “Law and Order” offered a possible answer. As the youngest child of my household, my older siblings affinity for the show naturally steered
As actor Vince Vaughn once said, “I support people having a gun in public full stop, not just in your home. We don 't have the right to bear arms because of burglars; we have the right to bear arms to resist the supreme power of a corrupt and abusive government. It 's not about duck hunting; it 's about the ability of the individual. It 's the same reason we have freedom of speech. It 's well known that the greatest defence against an intruder is the sound of a gun hammer being pulled back. All these gun shootings that have gone down in America since 1950, only one or maybe two have happened in non-gun-free zones. Take mass shootings. They 've only happened in places that don 't allow guns. These people are sick in the head and
Recently, state legislators and court rulings have made it possible for students on certain college campuses to carry concealed weapons. This is due in part to the shootings that have happened over the years and the increasing threat of unknown enemies. However, the issue has come into question and concern on college campuses. Some argue that guns on campus should be a choice left up to the individual, after all it is their 2nd Amendment right. Others would say that college campuses are a place of learning, a place that does not require firearms at all. Lastly, there are those who say that stricter gun laws would prevent crimes and shootings.
Possessing a firearm during a violent crime can help stop the crime from escalating or causing more damage. The victim can effectively stop the crime either by wounding the attacker or by scaring them off while brandishing their firearm. This sort of valiant action can help reduce the citizen’s reliance on police intervention. This would help reduce the amount of pressure being placed on officers to stop crime. Gun owners can create a sense of security or peace of mind for themselves and others. Allowing more people to carry firearms would call for the need to educate all citizens about firearm safety and handling. Even if someone’s personal beliefs restrict them from owning a firearm, they would at least know how to properly handle one to prevent self-harm.
One of the biggest issues facing our nation today seems to be gun control. The government is constantly proposing legislation for more and more gun laws. There are people that feel strongly on both sides of this issue. Neither side wants more gun violence; the question is how to control gun violence.
Gun control is an awfully big issue in the United States today. Many people in America don’t agree with the gun control laws that they have today. Gun control laws only take guns and freedom away from law-abiding citizens. Many citizens have their own reasons for owning a gun. Why would the government want to make it harder for people to own a gun? People that own guns aren’t very likely to be attacked by criminals. Owning a handgun is one of the best ways of protection when used correctly. The second amendment states “the right to bear arms”; does this grant everyone the right to own a gun? Gun control laws have not been proven to do anything for citizens. Gun control laws just make it harder for the good guy average Joe to own a gun. Gun control laws are not a good idea, and are taking part in the loss of our freedom that was given to us.
Gun Control is a very heavy topic in the United States and around the world. We need to improve gun control to ensure the safety of civilian in the United States. Huge gun massacres such as Sandy Hook where 20 six to seven year old children were shot fatally and 6 adult staff members brings up the topic on whether or not guns should be banned or not. We need to go over the laws for seller, guidelines for buyers, and outlaw specific guns.
