Free will is a very complicated concept that has been found to be present in both humans and animals and, as such, it is difficult to prove, and even theorise, whether or not humans are responsible for their own actions. While it is a heavy topic of discussion in both psychology and philosophy, it is the implications of this that is the most important. Just the impact of a population’s influence on an individual is evident in rules that are present in every society in existence. Rules are a crucial part to our society, with the basic Christian values held in the Ten Commandments governing the way in which our society functions (Federer, 2003). Religious beliefs – while not held by every single person of the population – still have a huge impact on what behaviours we believe to be good or bad. An example of this – exempt from the typical rules of not committing murder or thievery – is the fourth commandment which states “Keep Holy the Sabbath”, which has influenced the fact that Sundays are not included in any time limit for the president to make a decision. Evidence of religion has also been found in studies that demonstrate the way in which religion can dominate our lives and the way in which we act in relation to autonomy (Kunzendorf, Connors, Arrecis, Farrington & Carter, 2008). In conclusion, free will is not only possible, but quite probable, and, if there is free will, then, of course there is moral responsibility. Hard determinists have quite a few valid arguments to defend their case, but the best of them, the random probability argument, cannot be proven. Humanity’s understanding of physics just isn’t advanced enough to prove their claim to be true. Maybe at some point in time that will change, but for now it isn’t a good enough argument to disprove the possibility of free will, while the previous mentioned arguments in favor of free will find the concept of free will quite probable.
Free-will, the ability one has to act without the constraint of necessity or fate. It the power a person has to act at one’s discretion. Do we really have the freedom to experience what we want, when we choose? Some would say yes while some others will say no, philosophers have argued about this topic and there hasn’t been any particular conclusion yet. Most people appreciate the genuine freedom that accompanies choice, but do we really possess it? Complete free will would mean that our decisions would be unrelated to other factors such as the environment or genetics. In reality, our free decisions are based on factors that are beyond our own control. When exercising certain choices, we conclude that we have acted freely and distinguish our actions from situations in which we believe were not in our control. The events that are not in our control are pre-determined for us, which lead us on a path to a determined life.
