Thomas Alva Edison was an American inventor that greatly influenced life all around the world. His inventions helped shape modern day technology. Technology taken for granted today evolved from some of Thomas Edison’s inventions. One of his greatest contributions to society is his work with electricity. As a result of his works, society today is extremely dependent on electricity. Thomas Edison significantly impacted American history with his inventions and ideas, bringing the United States into technological dominance in his time with his innovation.
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio on February 11, 1847. Early in his life he would go to school, but his teachers did not understand his way of thinking. He ended up dropping out of school and was home schooled by his mother. Thomas Edison had two loves: experimenting and reading. At his first job as a telegrapher, he would want the night shift so he could have time to read his books and do his experiments. Out of these experiments came his first patented invention, the electric vote recorder. This was the first patent out of many that started Thomas Edison’s career as a brilliant inventor.
In Thomas Edison’s early career of inventing, he started out in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The invention of the phonograph solidified Thomas Edison’s role as an inventor. The phonograph made him a celebrity. He became known as the Wizard of Menlo Park with the success of the phonograph. In this time period during the late 19th century, this sound recording invention became a big deal. His argument was that if AC is that powerful, why would you want that kind of potentially dangerous current powering your home? Eventually, AC became the main current used because it was cheaper to use and more people would have access to it.
Thomas Edison’s contributions to American history and society are worth recognition, and his legacy can still be seen and appreciated today. His inventions helped strengthen American dominance in technological advances throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. His many inventions live on in advanced forms, but the same core ideas started with Thomas Edison. He propelled America into a new age of technology and prosperity. American history definitely would not be the same without the great inventor, Thomas Edison.
