Interviewer’s responses are an important principle in the interviewing process, just like many other standards that are involved such as interpersonal influence and attraction. The interview is meant to be purposeful, responsible and goal directed, and the assessor’s responses greatly influence the achievement of these objectives. These responses can either be characterized as effective or avoided (ineffective). Examples and discussion of both types of responses will be given for a list of statements made by a client during an interview that will depict how it could affect the conversation. These statements are likely to impede the interviewee, and by “by judging others, we put them on guard because we communicate the message, ‘“I don’t approve of this aspect of you”’ (Kaplan & Saccuzzo, 2018). This could affect the interviewer’s goal of obtaining data about the subject because of their angst to reveal information. Instead, the interviewer could use an effective response such as an open-ended question. These types of questions keep the interview flowing, and as a result, can reveal deeper information to better understand the interviewee. Although this reassurance may come from a good place, it should always be avoided as it originates from a place of falsehood. In this case, it is not known if the client is blaming the loss on everyone but himself or the team as a whole, but regardless, the necessary steps to fixing the situation are not being put in place and instead a helpless falsehood takes its place. Since the interviewee is describing how they feel, then the optimal response would be an empathetic of understanding response. “This response communicates that the interviewer understands how the interviewee feels” (Kaplan & Saccuzzo, 2018).
