Historical Overview

It is said that the first music festival took place in Ancient Egypt around 4500 B.C. during the Predynastic period. This music festival was based around religion and politics with featured music and dancing. While this was said to be the first festival, the first known music festival took place in Ancient Greece during the 6th century B.C. This festival took place during the Pythian games, which were held two years before and after the Olympic games. This festival featured competitions for music and poetry.

The IMBA was created for the type of music called “bluegrass” music. The first festival the IMBA held was in 1960’s, it was meant to increase availability of traditional music to those who grew up with the same music, but lost it in the trendy Beatles music that was rising. The IMBA alone has members in all 50 states in the U.S. and across the world in over 30 countries. IBMA is the trade association that connects and educates the musical stylings of bluegrass professionals, empowers the bluegrass community, and encourages worldwide appreciation of bluegrass music of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
