Thomas R. Pickering was terribly stubborn because he did not like the machines available at this time. He ran a power factory in the 17th century and really hated the gravity governor, a machine that controlled fuel and the speed of the engine. Pickering nagged that the gravity governor had very little control of the engine. He was angry and did not stop until a new machine replaced the slow, unreliable machine. So, in 1861, Thomas R. Pickering made his own governor, one so amazing that he named it after himself, the Pickering governor. The Pickering governor was very important in the railroad industry. This device had balls spinning against springs. this allowed for a person to have more control of the engine. The governor was very important to the railway industry because steam engines were very popular at this time.
